    Two New Hens

I have two new hens in my small flock. I'm just not sure what they are. Rhode Island Reds maybe? And I must say... it's not easy getting a good picture of a chicken. I've been photographing birds for a number of years and, for me, chickens are hands down one of the most challenging bird to...

    Talk About Frustrating

I haven't seen an egg since the spring and I'm about to make a BIG pot of stew. I started out with 3 hens (2 delawares and a white rock) The 2 delawares gave me lots of eggs for quite a while until they went into a molt for about 5 months. The white rock has given me many headaches, but about...

    Good News

The young chicks (5 weeks old) escaped from their pen today and got in with the older hens. I'm not sure how long they were together but everybody seemed to be getting along when I came along. The hens were slightly aggressive toward the young'ns but the chicks seemed to know to stay out of...

    Trying to determine Delware gender

This is Biscuit, Omlet, and Noodle. I got them from a fellow who breeds show birds. Trying to figure out what I have here... This one is Dumpling. I'm not sure that this one is even a Delaware. It's about 5 days older than the others.

How do you travel with chicks

Yipee!!! I found a few more chick friends for my one lonely chick, Dumpling. I have to go pick them up tomorrow morning. So how does one travel with baby chicks? They are only 3 days old. Do I need to keep them warmer than what's comfortable in the car? It's about an hour drive.

I need a name for my new chick. (Pic)

This is my newest member of the flock. The only egg that hatched under my broody hen and then abandoned by mom. Now living indoors with me. But she needs a name. (I just hope she's a she) I was thinking of Chicklet, or Dumpling. (Her mother's name is Stew.)

Can Squirrels Harm Chickens or Eggs

I saw a squirrel in the chicken pen today. Likely going inside the coop to eat seeds but can a squirrel be dangerous to the chickens or the eggs? These are the little Red Squirrels not those big Grey things. We don't have those here.

    Mixing chicks question

Hi, Right now I have one lonely little chick in a brooder and I would like to get 2 or 3 more. Problem is I can't get them until the middle of June. My current chick will be 6 weeks old by then. Would I be able to put them together or will the older chick go after the young ones?

    What To Feed

Is there something else can feed a young (3 day old) chick besides buying a 40lb bag of chick feed for one wee chick? I'm thinking maybe something I could pick up at a pet shop?

    vitamins and electrlytes.

Hi, Where does a person get vitamins and electorlytes. I know the farm stores here won't carry such things unless it's in 40lb bags. Can you get them at pet shops? Any online stores in Canada that sell such things? Thanks for any suggestions.

    One Chick Pic

The little trooper seems to be doing fine. I wish I had a few friends for her but the next local chick delivery isn't until the middle of June. And boy, am I ever hoping that she's a she.

    One Chick Survives

My broody let her eggs get cold last night just as they were starting to hatch. I took the eggs inside and put them into a makeshift incubator and one chick has hatched out. The others have no sign of life. This one little chick is real trooper. It's lifting it's head now and peeping like...

Day 21 Under a Broody Hen

Eggs, eggs are under her, not me. Nothing yet but when I candled one of the eggs this morning I could just barely see a little movement. Will she defend them from the other hens. I opened her pen this morning and one of the other hens tried to peck at her. She didn't defend herself and more...

    Where do Chicks Roost?

This might seem like a dumb question but, if you let mother hen raise her own chicks where do they roost? Obviously little chicks can't hope onto a roost. Do they go back to the nest?

Let Mother Hen Look After Them

Hi, I've had three hens for almost two years now and one of them is constantly broody. I would like to stick a couple of chicks under her some night and let her raise them. Can this be done and if so... Will she protect them from the other two hens? How would I feed the chicks? Am I out of my...

My Pen Is Holding Up Well...

...considering all of the snow we have this year. I added a few photos to my page. https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=35496 (at the bottom) At first I though keeping all that snow off the roof was going to be a problem, but the more snow we get the easier it gets because...

Finally, An Egg But It's Broken

After three months of no eggs I finally found an egg today. It was in the nest where they usually lay but it was broken. Here's the story.... Three hens. One of them never lays. End of that story. The other two were very good layers until this fall. They started moulting but it seems to be...

    What To Do

Hi, I would like to know how people go about increasing the size of their small/tiny flock. Right now I have 2 Delawares which I want to keep and 1 White Rock which I would like to take to someone to have... well, you know. I would also like to get 2 more laying hens but I've been told that...
