Hello and welcome to the Las Vegas thread!
Hi all! I've spent lots of time on the NV thread and learned a ton from those people regarding chickens, gardens, recipes and such. I'm kinda jealous of the community they've formed there...jealous because most of them are in Northern NV, not...
While I was out of state last month, someone from church called and said they'd found a hen with chicks in their front yard. They'd had them about a week and had heard we kept chickens so maybe we wanted them? My sister made a place for them and they brought them by...a hen and 3 chicks, each...
I have some chickens that are sneezing and wheezing...I have decided to cull them but need to know a few things. Do I just get the gurglers? or the sneezers? Can some of them not be infected yet? What do I do with the bodies? Process, burn, bury...? I have a friend who will help but I need to...
I got home from vacation last night and am wishing I had never gone. My sister was taking care of my flock, a rather labor intensive job in the hellish heat of Las Vegas right now, and I'm grateful but I am freaking out. I expected the panting...it's hot! I knew that some were starting to moult...
I am getting ready to set eggs in my homemade incubator. Humidity has been a problem in the past and I really want a hygrometer I can trust! So...if you have a brand that you've used and trust, please share that info with me so I can make an informed decision when I hit ebay! Also...I really...
These are some of my friends birds.
I think she has a Buff Orp roo and hen (sorry for the poor pic of the hen in pic #2 and yes the roo is crossbeaked),
a Red Sex-Link hen,
and ... no idea about the one with the dark brown head and red body.
Anybody able to help?
I need to know whether the ideal 99.5 temp for forced air (homemade) bator should be the temp of air outside the eggs or the temp inside the water wiggler? Which is more important. Obviously the two temps are not the same in my bator on either of my wigglers. I have four thermometers/hygrometers...
So. Today is Day 24. The last egg that had pipped hatched a few hours ago. My question is WHAT NOW? Do I let the others go another day? If there's no pips can I candle them? If alive can they be saved?
Wondering what to use as the substrate for a brooder. Have a lot of sawdust, have some newspaper and also have a bunch of pine shavings. Which would be best?
I am so proud of my little bro! His band, Shark Speed, has released a great cd and now a new ep under their own label. They have put so much work into it. Sounds awesome.
Please follow this link and check them out...free of charge!

Bought these two from a local lady billed as Ameraucanas. I love them and don't care if they are or not just want to know. They haven't laid yet so egg color isn't a help.

I was given this beautiful hen this summer. I live in Vegas and it is very hot. She was molting when I got her and I swear her feathers came back with a ton more white in them. I think that may be an adaptation to the heat...? Anyways, I think she is a Speckled Sussex because of the brown...
I aquired 4 - 3yr old hens (1 golden comet, 1 silver laced wyandotte, 1 golden laced wyandotte, and 1 buff orpington) about 1 week ago. They are all in rough shape with major feather loss on their back, butt, and underside. I have plenty of laying mash available plus I have been giving them a...
