Externally pipped egg moved on its side

Duck egg externally pipped today. I noticed the egg is moved though from rocking. Should I reposition it so the external pip is on the side of the egg...because now its nearer to the top of the egg. I hope this makes sense.

Does my duckling looked shrink wrapped

This is day 30. It internally pipped Saturday and never externally pipped. I didn't see movement or ever hear chirping. I made a safety hole Sunday and still didn't see movement but I did hear very faint chirps, but the duckling sounded weak. I opened the cap a little to investigate and found...

    Delaying lockdown?

Today is day 25 for my duck eggs. One is a Peking and the other is a mallard mix. So I candled today and neither of them have internally pipped yet. I have been turning them today like normal. Tomorrow is lockdown and I read for people with homemade incubators that have trouble keeping...

    Forcing a Brood -suggestions?

Hi there. My 8 month old Mallard laid two eggs yesterday. Also yesterday our khaki Campbell passed away unexpectedly with two eggs in her own nest. Probably not more than 5 days old...and Im not sure if she was sitting on them, although she was putting straw over them. Anyways, I put her eggs...

My sweet Khaki Campbell died last night

I happened to look out the window last night and saw my "Brownie" laying on the ground. My two male ducks were on top of her and biting her head. She is a khaki Campbell and "Cookie" one of the males that was on her is too. The other male is a Cayuga and they were all bought at the same...

    Landscaping the Duck Park

Yesterday I finally got around to transplanting the flowers from the front yard flag pole to put them in and around the chickens' and ducks' park. I had cosmos, marigolds, zinnias and they grew so tall our flag was touching them. Hubby bought some yellow tulips, hyacinths and crocus bulbs so I...

Is it okay to pen up roosters without hens?

I read other other posts that its fine to have a bachelor pen for the boys and keep the girls in their own. One of my 2 roosters mounted one of my hens (I have 3 hens.) and he ripped her side open under her wing. It upset me to know one of them could do that and seeing I only have three hens...

Where to find good duck pools?

Is it just me or are the plastic blue pools super thin now? I remember as a kid my mom would buy one and they were so thick and held up all summer long! Now I buy two and stack one inside the other to make it sturdy. The pools for sale in the garden area of the stores are cracked on the bottom...

Shale pieces instead of pea gravel in duck run?

I have an abundant amount of natural shale on our property. Essentially I'm thinking I could save money by using shale instead of pea gravel. I'd be using shale only around the ducks pool to keep the area around it dry. Would it be harmful to use shale instead of pea gravel for this? Thanks! I...

Brown bantam leghorn? Rooster or Hen?

I took better pictures today of our "ninja". I googled them and it comes up with brown Leghorn or even brown leghorn bantam. What do you think the breed and gender is? Its only 6 months old and we have two other Rhode Island Red hens same age. Someone laid small brown eggs then quit. No eggs...

What is your favorite dIY chicken/ duck hack?

I practically live on Pinterest scrolling all the duck and chicken stuff. 😍 I see really neat unconventional items being repurposed into nesting boxes, coops, dust baths, landscaping, etc. We all as raptor owners need to be able to think outside the coop every whip stitch because let's face it...

    Chocolate Runner or Khaki Campbell

I have two of these brown little cuties and both look exactly the same. They are about 3 weeks old.Are these little brownies a runner or khaki? Beak and feet are a very dark brown. It's down is a medium golden brown. Also, take a peek at the other photos. The yellow and black one I thought was...

Landscaping for duck and chicken pen

What foraging plant options could I grow along the interior fence line for my ducks? I have lavender, mint, blackberries, & rosemary that I can transplant if those are good options? There is a willow tree that will be in their pen for shade. I have to put fencing around it for now until it grows...

Is my "Ninja" a Bantam Brahma hybrid?

This is my sweet "Ninja". I thought it was a rooster because of the comb and beard. BUT it seems to have a hen tail. I got it from Tractor Supply and I think the tag said Bantam or Brahma.. ?? I can't remember. It would be so helpful to know because I have two female RIR and someone started...

    Muddy slanted run

We have a dog pen sheltering our wooden chicken coop. The land is slanted so between the chickens scratching and the obvious tilt of the ground, straw always ends up and the lower side of the coop. This makes for a very very muddy run area. I have slipped trying to re rake the straw back and...
