We’ve got 2 Guineas that were raised with 14 pullets. For some reason the Guineas have started rushing into the middle of their clutch mates , and the other hens, and chasing them aggressively.
Tried separating them in their own coop, but as soon as we let them out to free range they go back...
Will start with the most costly, and harder to solve problem…
Mice.
We have been raising chickens for about 4 years. Had a small issue with mice last year in our barn. Was advised at that time, by Al G. Among others, to control feed and access. Of course, we thought it was under control, put...
We hatched our first incubator clutch in January, 16/20 hatched and 2 passed after hatch.
Now at 2 months old we are looking at definite 4 cockerels, it’s a mixed flock but these 4 are leghorn mix so combs are well defined.
Not sure of the others yet, but was curious what most of the community...
We purchased, at Rural King Farm Store, 4 Buckeye, 4 White Faced Spanish, and 2 turkeys around 7 weeks ago. A week later we hatched an incubator clutch of 14 from our hens,( so mixed breeds).
The Buckeyes get real lethargic without a heat lamp , even during the day when it’s mid 70’s, and 2 of...
Last year, due to ladies abandoning their coops to start roosting in the barn, we converted part of the barn to a large coop. Got tired of scraping chicken poo off our tractors when we needed to use them...
We recently, earlier this week, hatched our first clutch in an incubator. 15/20 hatched with 2 passing after hatching.
We have a mixed flock so these chicks could be anything.
We also have 12 store bought ,( hard to get breeds) in a seperate brooder in the same room that are 8 days to 2 weeks...
We got a strange egg yesterday.
It’s from one of our older ladies. 2-3 year olds. Or at least was in the nesting box in their coop and was laid late in the day as we collected eggs around 2pm and found this one near lockdown time.
Is it a high calcium issue, we do use layer feed mixed with...
After set up and warm up it will not get below 60% humidity.
Opened the vent all the way to get it to drop below 68%.
Don’t want to ruin the eggs, haven’t put them in yet, but is recommending 50-55%.
Any suggestions?
Tried calling company but number on website is disconnected.
Have had our 8 week old pullets on look-don’t touch for about 3 weeks now.
Tried opening the coop to let them mingle a bit on Saterday. A couple of them ventured out and got less than 3’ from the door when a hen came running from the other side of the coop and attacked.
They ran back in the...
We got these beautiful chicks last May, and though they are large birds, they haven’t layed an egg.
We only let them free range every other day, so would think we would be getting a couple eggs in the nest on off days even if they have a hidden nest somewhere.
This is them last May.
This is...
So, my wife went out to the coops this morning and notice a difference in the flock’s demeanor. Once she started looking around she found 2 dead chickens, a Roo and hen, just inside the barn torn up, but not a lot of feathers around. She walked out to the pasture and found 7 more dead chickens...
These rollaway nests have been on the wall a month now and we have gotten 3 eggs out of them.
There are 50 + hens that have access to this, and maybe 10 girls have jumped up to explore this setup.
We put a little hey in there to get them to check it out, but not enough to block the egg roll.
Not...
I know, it’s Florida, and being a Lineman means I won’t be home for the storm that will be making landfall near home.
My Wife is used to it, though aggravated by it at the same time, and I feel bad every time that I can’t be there to help prep.
Here are the things she does to try and protect...
We were awakened late last night by a ruckus in the garage.
We have a couple of hens that found out about the wonders of cat food so we can’t get them to leave the garage area.
Anyway, we go out and find an opossum chewing on feathers where or bantam hen usually roosts. We were in a panic and...
Here it is a few days after TS Debby made her nasty way across the farm, torrential rain for days on end, and this is what the coops are looking like.
We are in Central Florida, which is why we have the open air coops, and have been using straw on the ground to use as compost, and scrape the...
Being that , for some reason only known to the girls, a majority of them have abandoned the coop and have been roosting in the barn, we made the decision to enclose part of the barn. Mainly to keep our tractor and mower from getting shat upon all the time.
This will be a several seperate post...
Our next to last clutch of chicks are now in their teenage phase. Wanting to start mating, the new Roos of course, and starting to lay little tiny egglettes.
Not sure on breed, but these speckled hens(6) and Rooster are very tame and loving.
These 2 are small, bantams, though skittish, same...
SO found a person that is looking for roosters and swears they aren’t going to eat them, that’s her only stipulation on giving away the roosters.
We don’t have the heart to cull them , but we have way too many, and for the sake of our ladies backs we have to do something. That and I’m working...
