    Sideways toe

One of our one year old hens has a toe that has started going sideways, see pic. I also noticed the toenail is long but not sure if that's a cause or effect (chicken or egg ha). Should I trim the nail? Is the toe broken? She seems otherwise fine.

Hen stopped laying after shell broke inside her

I have a 1yo hen who had an egg break inside her a week ago. She had had shell quality issues that got better, then worse, then the break. She was pretty unwell for a couple days then recovered. She has been doing great but hasn't laid an egg since. I did calcium for a few days then stopped...

    Thin wrinkly shells

One of our 1 year old hens started laying wrinkly shelled eggs a few weeks ago. On layer crumble, about an hour of free range a day, and a teaspoon of mealworms. It progressed to shell-less eggs laid while roosting overnight and I started on 400mg calcium citrate daily. That seemed to help...

    Pemethrin yard spray?

The thatching ants are already getting out of hand this year to where I can't go into the yard in flip flops. They are also starting to go into our chicken run. They bite/sting horribly and steal the chickens' snacks and I'm sick of it. I was thinking of spraying permethrin around the yard but...

    Black marks on comb

One of our hens recently developed black marks on both sides of the back of her comb. She doesn't love being handled so I haven't picked her up for a close look .. wondering if these are just peck marks how long they would take to heal? Or should grab her to check it out?

What do you feed during cold weather?

I'm new to chickens, and we're expecting our first cold snap. With horses we change how we feed during the winter as they generate body heat through digestion. Do chickens do this? Do you change what you feed during cold weather? If so, how?

    Easy coop window idea

Hi all, wanted to share this super easy way to make a coop window. We did a playhouse to coop conversion this summer and I tried several different types, this was by far the easiest and cheapest. Pics attached, but basically I put trim around the window opening, and covered it with plexiglass...

3 new pullets, 2 gone broody!

I'm a first time chicken momma. Got 3 chicks this spring, and all 3 started laying about a month and a half ago. Two weeks ago one went broody, a day in the chicken tractor snapped her out of it but she hasn't started laying again yet. Today another went broody! I'm in the pacific northwest so...
