Clucky is a black australorp, almost 9 months old. She has not started laying!!! Has anybody else had a pullet go that long before laying? Has anyone had one that NEVER laid an egg? She is healthy and she has finished a minor molt. She eats organic layer feed, free ranges a couple hours a...
Hello, everyone. Something took my favorite little bantam hen between 5:30 - 7:30 the other evening. She was in the coop, broody, but the door was open. The feathers I found were outside the coop and I'm thinking she got up and ran and it got her outside. I would say raccoon but doesn't...
Hi! I have 4 chicks and I just got them last Monday. So, I've spent a lot of time observing them and I don't quite understand this one behavior I'm seeing. One, who I'm thinking might be a cockerel, runs up to any of the other three who stretch their bodies out and flap their wings and chest...
Hello! I can't tell you how happy I am to be here!! I was a member of the "original" BYC and came here in 2007 when everything changed hands. BUT, I gave my chickens away in 2008 (long story) and just got four little 2 month old bantams yesterday to begin chickening again! I have to pinch...
Hello! I gave up my small flock in 2008 and have forgotten a lot of what I learned since I haven't really been active here very much since then. Hoping to change that now that I am adopting 4 bantam pullets in just TWO HOURS!!!!! :celebrate So, I have two questions for right now. 1). What...
I bought a very small coop so that I would be forced to only get a few birds. I think two standard size or four bantams would be all it is good for. I really wanted standard size but was hoping to get four chickens (the more the merrier, right?). If it were you, what would you do? (I had...
Hello!! Just bought a very small coop that's only good for 3-4 chickens. Basically, they will only sleep in it and lay eggs. So the Floor is about 2 1/2 x 2 1/2 feet and pulls out to clean. Do you think it would be okay if I just used newspaper and replaced it every morning when I let them out?
Hi there! I haven't had chickens for a couple of years and really, REALLY want to get some again...just 2 or 3 for pets. I was thinking, if I got bantams, could I keep them in a very large dog crate in my basement at night and let them outside during the day? I did this once before when I...
I was at the Whole Foods supermarket yesterday (I live in No. Va.) and they were selling 1/2 dozen silkie eggs for SIX DOLLARS!!! Does that hit you as totally outrageous like it did me!!???
All was well with my little backyard flock but Miss Silver, my OEGB x silkie pullet, was broody and hankering for some chicks. There's no rooster in my flock so, unless I provided her with chicks or some fertile eggs, she was not going to get her much-longed-for brood of chicks. She sat on...
Perhaps someone has already posted about this high school girl and the movement she has begun. In case you don't know about it, here is one of many news articles about her. Perhaps you'd like to sign the petition to stop high schools from requiring students to kill chickens and other animals...
The fall festival where I work has 2 turkeys. The owner of the place wants to let them loose when it's over. He thinks they'll hang with the peacock and/ or guineas that free range now. Will the turkeys be safe? I'm assuming size is on their side! Any feedback is most welcome. Thanks!
I went to the farm today where I take care of the poultry during the fall festival and found one of the pheasants with his leg totally broken in half. There were a couple of tendons (?) holding it on but the leg was facing backwards and the break was all jagged. I have no idea what happened...
Could someone please tell me if this guy is an OEGB or a white faced Spanish? Don't think it's a rosecomb because it doesn't have a rosecomb! LOL He came from McMurrays Hatchery the week before Easter so he's about 5 1/2 months old. Thanks!!!

Hmmm...well... do we call this success or not? No pic but a way to get to it! This is me at my magical job of taking care of the bunnies and poultry at the fall festival at Cox Farms. I look happy and I AM!!!
HELLO EVERYONE. APPARENTLY I CAN'T CUT AND PASTE FROM FACEBOOK!! I'LL HAVE TO REPOST TOMORROW WHEN I CAN GET THE PERSON WITH THE PICTURES TO DO IT. THANKS...
