Besides the all white breeds of turkeys are there any heritage breeds that don't have dark pin feathers?
I thought I had heard that the Bourbon Reds and possibly Jersey Buffs had light in feathers but would like more info on other breeds before I start ordering poults this year.
Anyone know...
I hatched out three white hollands about 6 weeks ago, two are larger than the other one.
I notice those two also have tannish blotches on their heads compared to the all white head of the other one.
So I had been assuming those are the males even though I have never seen them strut.
I walked by...
I have some one month old White Hollands in the brooder and one of them continuously chirps out this 4 syllable call.
I don't know if they are girls or boys yet but its only one that does it, I am guessing maybe it wants out? I don't know.
Its driving me absolutely mad because it hasn't stopped...
I saw a wild turkey walking down main street this morning at a busy intersection like it was walking down the country lane.
No one down that way keeps turkeys, its all gas stations and dunkin donut type places there and it definitely looked like the wild turkeys that ended up on my front lawn...
Yesterday was the 25th day for the White Hollands so I went to take them out of the automatic turner when I hear a peeping from one of the eggs, on closer inspection I realized one had already pecked a tiny hole in the shell.
My son was holding that egg and I hadn't even noticed when I handed it...
I ordered some White Hollands hatching eggs from our members Steve and Sharon of Sands Poultry and they came in the mail today.
I have never incubated turkey eggs so this is a first for me.
I figured that they would arrive today and kept my eye out for the mail truck all day.
When I saw it pull...
I keep hearing about how fragile poults are for the first 8 weeks or so. There seems to be alot of guidelines such as raising them on wire and things of that nature in order to keep them safe.
Is it much better if they are raised by their turkey momma? If they are on the ground from an early...
Can someone tell me when turkey eggs or poults usually become available?
I know there are a few eggs scattered here and there but when most of the eggs/poults become available.
I am wondering if the heritage breeds will have enough time to grow out for the holidays because I am reading different...
There are alot of people inquiring about processors right now, there are always people looking for someone in their area.
I have the names and contact info for a couple of processors and I am thinking if we could get a list going maybe it could be made into a sticky.
It would be an excellent...
Does anyone know anything about kosher meat birds, as in breed, growth rate etc.?
I told someone that I would add some chicks to their order and my husband ran into them today and they said to tell me they were getting some kosher meat birds chicks.
He didn't think to ask them what hatchery, I...
Does anyone feel there is a big difference in ordering heritage turkeys from a hatchery versus private breeders?
I want to start the heritage turkeys very soon but most breeders have not started selling hatching eggs yet and by the time I can get them and hatch them its going to be later than I...
I am wondering what the average loss would be on an order of turkey poults and what the biggest cause is.
I hear that turkeys are always finding new ways to get themselves killed so if you were to keep them in the brooding pen in the coop and off the soil for the first 8-10 weeks will that head...
I ordered some poults from a farm yesterday that has their own line of BB Whites, I am only getting them to have for the holidays and to stock my freezer.
Now I am trying to decide on a good pet type turkey.
I am looking at different heritage breeds but am not sure.
I had thought of the Bourbon...
I bought a 31 lb white holland for yesterdays dinner and it was way bigger than any other 30lb turkey I have ever bought before.
I have always been able to use the same pan for my turkeys including the one that I was told was 34 lbs but this one barely fit.
The breast meat was several inches...
I was at a local nursery the other day and they have a petting zoo there.
I was amazed at how many animals they had crammed into a pen.
I asked them if they kept them there all the time and he said yeah their fine they have a dry place to go, which is just an overhang in the pen.
He made the dry...

Well my first batch of meatbirds were processed this morning.
The processor said they were great looking birds.
I wanted to divide the batch between now and the next to weeks so I could get different sizes.
Todays birds all weighed in the 6 pound range so I am very happy with the way things are...
What is the difference if any between the broad breasted bronze or broad breasted whites?
I know they both grow large faster than the other breeds and they are used the most commercially but anything else?
Around here the broiler feed is 18% unless you do flock raiser 20% or game bird chow 30%
The other option if you want the nutrients in a broiler feed and not something for another type of poultry is to have the mill mix it for you, which I am seriously considering anyway.
I had heard from...
