Well, I suppose 'he' doesn't look like her either!
So, I'm sloppy about lifting photos off the internet. I searched for "Black Jersy Rooster'; but as I looked through the results, I guess, I was more focused on pose for comparison.
Thanks for your comments, TaraBellaBirds . . . and right you are.
Capon Update:
Caponized at 6 1/2 weeks old; current age 17 weeks.
These were "meal maker" birds, so I am only guessing as to the breed.
Left: Barred Rock Rooster (image from web); Right: my capon at 17 weeks.
Left: Black Jersy Giant (image from web); Right: my capon at 17 weeks...
I'd like to find two males (Meal Maker style - most any full sized breed) that will be four to eight weeks old in December or January.
Prefer Northeast Ohio; but Northwest Ohio, and Central Ohio still within range.
Success!
2 for 2 yesterday and doing well today, though some healthy doses of 'stink eye' as I check on them.
Had three 6 1/2 week birds - in hindsight, one was much less 'male' in developing appearance. Lack of testes and likely oviduct confirmed that she was a mis-identified FryPan Special...
So, I finally got back to these posts which reminded me that I ordered the tool set from the Mister Tao website - and I never received them.
So FYI to all:
My credit card initially declined the order because it was unusual overseas activity. After a phone call to CC, it went through.
I...
Thanks for the comments everyone!
joan1708 - the chicken plaque was my father-in-law helping again. :)
I believe he bought it on e-bay (Adv.search for seller: rockwood79)
Someday, I'll decide on a "Gallus Haus" sign, but I'm still thinking about ideas.
My Campine is really a hoot! She is by far the most talkative of my girls. She is also the most curious/nosy - first out into the run when I enter and first back into the coop when I am fidgeting around in there. Just has to see what's going on.
This is her last May.
And then at the end...
Thanks. My current clutch (straight run) is 5 1/2 weeks. And I processed a couple last night - they were not sufficiently fasted - and then a couple different ones more this morning. One male I located and removed one testicle and just can't find the other (tried from the right side too - no...
Any chance you have or can find photos of a poulardizing procedure. I'm still having trouble with clutch of straight run birds - I just tried two and could not locate the testes. I will wait til morning for the others as they just haven't fasted enough. Thought it would be nice if I knew...
Anyone still have info or source of pics on poulards? I'd like to see some pictures of the procedure and of the ovary as it is identified and removed.
I have tried a couple of capons - but my latest clutch is straight run and I have just learned of poulards, found this thread but the links no...
>3riverschick, The sprouts hold themselves in quite well - the small mesh of the basket is the important part. The roots naturally grow down and holds them in. I have seen seeds sprouted in solid containers (like Glad or Ziploc plastic containers) and the roots form a nice solid mat, but I think...
I went to Meyer's this morning for a pickup. Astantz, if you haven't made your trip yet, be forewarned that they have tubs of ducklings and goslings. They are super cute. I am in no way set up for ducks or geese, so I could resist. I did find myself wondering " How could I manage something...
My entry: Gallus Haus
https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/gallus-haus
I think it is sufficiently picture-heavy, as requested.
Will edits and updates still be accepted thru 4/15?
As with everything with me, it's a work in progress.
Well, one successfully caponized, one lost and two unsuccessful attempts that I stopped - they are still too small.\
The capon was recovering nicely (48hrs); then unfortunately, I believe that my dog was a little too curious and did him in. I found the capon legs up last night. My fault for...
Though I am interested, I don’t have a lot of opportunity to explore “green” building techniques and designs. This Suburban chicken coop is my opportunity to put some ideas to the test.
I got my chicks in mid-May so that I had to get a coop built before they outgrew their brooder. I got 10...
To cross reference threads, I did my first practice caponizing today.
I put some notes in Post #180 at the following thread
:
www.backyardchickens.com/t/675898/graphic-pics-of-my-day-learning-to-caponize/170
I lost one of the chicks I picked up this week. So, though it is a few weeks early, I took this as an opportunity to practice.
Result: 4 days is way too early as my tools are ridiculously oversized.
Had this been a live bird, this would have been a slip almost for sure (I removed both...
