Hello, I've just found out today that my city council has voted to allow residence to house up to 6 laying hens. ok, yay! This was in my local paper. The next sentence said "The council has yet to determine a cost for residents who want to raise the animals."
I guess first off, I'd like to...
Unexpected life upset. Must place my 27 laying hens, free. They are sex-linked Gold Stars, will start laying the end of Aug/first part of Sept. They are very docile and friendly. 515-291-6738 Lisa

There's going to be a couple of times this summer when I'm gone and my mother will be taking care of my chickens for me. I have 27 laying hens. I have a 3.5 gallon typical red/white plastic waterer and I know right now that my mom will never be able to fill it, flip it and hang it up. :-(...
k, so I already ordered them.
I did not build my coop yet but I will. When I lived in IA, I ordered Gold Star chicks from Hoover Hatchery which are advertised to be extremely docile and they were! They were awesome, so now since I moved to NC, I still wanted to order the same kind...
Lowes is great for stuff like that. If you ever need shingles just ask one of the guys for a broken open bag from in the back. They can't really do anything with partials like that, I bought 2 almost full bundles of shingles for $5!!!
Coop building time again. I had help the first time but this time I'm on my own.
Question # 1: When I see these coop designs with nesting boxes that you access from outside the coop by lifting up a lid, what do you do framing wise to support the nesting box? I'm not getting that. Even...
No, I've butchered before. I had a friend with 3 spent hens who showed me how. She skins them though as she pressure cooks the spent hens because their tough. It's not that I ~couldn't~ do it, I'd just prefer not too. I think everyone should ~know~ how to do it. Plus, they only charge...
ok, I have a line on a processor who does chickens, in Ackley. Will call on Monday. There are several others in the area too. I found out at Brekke's in Ames, the local Purina feed mill. I will get the broilers from Hoover's, test drive this time around. And yes, I AM getting addicted already!!

Rats, I just called them and they don't butcher chickens. I didn't think this was going to be so difficult to find.
I don't know yet what kind of meat birds I will get. I got my laying hens from Brekke's in Ames, they came from Hoovers Hatchery (link below), I will probably just...
These are from the yellow pages, none of them say Grimes, so they must all be DSM, but do any of these ring a bell:
Amend Packing Co.
Iowa Pacific Processors
Sunset Foods
Swan Packing
Vanderose Foods
If not, I can just start calling all of them.
I want to try meat birds for the first time this year, I've already decided that I want to go to a processor for the butchering. I'm in central Iowa, Ames area, I was intending to get my birds butchered at Golly's in Maxwell but I just called there and they are no longer butchering chickens...
I'm thinking maybe it is. I will be really bummed if it is. Here is an excerpt from craigslist, their prohibited list:
# Pet animal parts, blood, or fluids - including but not limited to stud/breeding service
#Non-packaged food items or adulterated food.
These are the 2 items I found on...
