Thank you for this article. I am no expert but found that when the Mama and babies can go outside , if the season is nice, that I make a special chicken wire enclosure for them in the area where the the rest of the flock hang out during the day. This way the rest of the flock get to see the...
I have an Elizabeth coop from Green Coops and it falling apart after 18 months...doors fell OFF, vents broken, paint job or wood cracking and peeling and I live in the Southeast bit bitter cold. There were wide ope spaces everywhere. I have hurt my head so many times from that ridiculous...
That is exactly the problem. Feed stores mostly carry the common breeds, not heritage breeds. The ones they carry lay like crazy for 2 years and are then dinner. I prefer the longer lived heritage breeds that might not be a laying machine but they still produce 4-5 eggs a week!
Are all Orpingtons breeds equally as friendly as the Buff Orpington? I want to add Jubilee and Blue Gold Orpingtons to my flock but am wondering is they are as friendly as the Buff Orps? Temperament is very important to me.
This is one of my stunning Barnies from Trisha. She is sweet and follows me around. Her name is Kate Middlehen. :) Thank you Trisha for the time that you have invested in making this breed so exquisite!
Just thought you all would like to know that the photos I posted were indeed pullets. They had developed very pink wattles and combs quite early. They were all females so I gave them all away. Luckily my friend also had one of my roosters so she will be able to get some eggs for me to hatch. As...
My 1 year old Welsummer hen began what I thought was crowing. She is the leader of the flock. She comes to me ent out to feed them she went to my front door, still crowing as if to tell me she was sick. She was. Last week she had a day of sneezing but I did not see watery eyes or nose. This...
Yes, that is my coop, home sweet home to 12 chickies. I found homes for all the boys, one where they will not be eaten. The couple belong to the a chicken group with me and have taken other chickens from me. Thanks again for all of your help.
Thank you again. I was hoping there was a chance these were girls. I appreciate your explanation about how the pullets get redder after 4 months. Sorry for being a dweeb. I wasn't understanding why some of the flower hens looked as though they could be girls as I was looking at older ones...
I hope some of that raise Light Sussex can help me. I incubated this one lone Light Sussex. It is now 14 weeks old. All along I thought it was a female because I saw other photos of light sussex hens that had red combs and waddles. This chicken had very thick legs and is quite large. I would so...
I bought 7 Swedish Flower Hens about 7-8 weeks ago. Sadly it looks as though they are all males. They all have combs this pinkish/yellow color. I incubated four of my own in March. Three had small yellow combs and waddles with the one male having a bright red and thick comb. From looking at some...
OH OH, I have a light Sussex that is 13 weeks that has a red comb and waddles that I was sure was a girl. They aren't big but are red and largerb than yours. I have wanted one of these forever. :(
I have a burning question. Do pullets or hens get waddles and combs? I have several that are eight weeks old but they are not dark red..more of a pinkish color. The males I have a very red and look thicker. ??????????
I would love that in the Spring. I have had the worst luck with these Flower Hens. I hatched 4 out of about 3 billion eggs shipped eggs which were promised to friends. So I bought 8 from Greenfire and it looks as though 7 of those are roos too. Ugh...and they are all so pretty. I will post the...
