Cute idea to upcycle a playhouse! I imagine that they poop on their nesting boxes under the sleeping perches. I would suggest removing that nesting box. With so few hens, they can share one. My six hens share one box and do fine. Make one side for sleeping and the other for nesting and you won't...

Smallest hole a chicken can get through?

I'm having the same problem. I reduced the size of the chicken hole to 6"x8". My chickens got in and out fine, but so did my pygmy mini goats. I'm going to use a piece of wood to make it smaller. I had no idea the tenacity of a goat who was trying to get to chicken feed. It was incredible to...

How to put day old chicks under a broody hen.....

Thanks so much for this great description! I'm moving 3 day old chicks under my hen tonight. It's my first time doing it. The hen has never been raised chicks, but is an excellent setter. Wish me luck!

    The perfect hen nest. Cheap!!

I wouldn't stack them more than 2 bins high, it makes it too wobbly.

    The perfect hen nest. Cheap!!

$10 stackable bins from Lowe's. Cheap to buy, easy to clean, perfect amount of space! I've been using mine for 2 years and they still look great! For the top bins, under the wood shavings, is a 12" cement paver to weight it so that when the hens jump to the top, the whole thing doesn't topple over.

How to keep chickens off patio?

Has anyone tried those motion-sensored sprinklers? Some brands advertise that they have a 35 ft. sensor. That is about the length of my patio and might work to keep them off of it.

For those of you asking about cost, when we built this coop it cost about $500. That's for lumber, hardware cloth, screws, paint, hinges, handles, the roofing material...the whole shabang.

We built this coop! It's perfect! We even painted ours barn red and white and used an identical corrugated roof! Totally adorable. We had to make a few customizations to meet our needs because we live in southern California and the summer temperatures are regularly in the hundreds. We added a...

Hi there! We built this coop! Thank you so much for all of the pictures and captions! We thought yours was so cute that we painted ours barn-red and white too. We made some modifications because we are in southern California and it gets plenty hot here - sometimes 110. So lots and lots of...
