    slow to feather

Pretty sure you're right on rooster since the companion was another rooster. Both defected to my neighbor's yard, and I haven't seen either in weeks. He was a beautiful bird! We really need a better fence.

    trace minerals

Just picked up my first Azure order, thanks you evil, evil people! Of course I picked up a lot more than simply kelp powder. But I needed, NEEDED, all of it, right? So do I just sprinkle some in their scrap bin every day or few? Or can I put it in a free choice bucket plain, like oyster or...

    Still no eggs...

You are doing it right: moving is a HUGE stress on chickens. I've had birds who start laying in as little as 1-2 weeks after moving, and others who need closer to a month. Don't hurry them along, just keep things very calm. Put their feed and water near the door you want them to use, and...

    trace minerals

and by organic, I don't mean "pesticide free" etc, nor do I think inorganic elements are not in fact chemicals, but rather organically derived mineral supplement. For some reason, the rock powders don't seem to have the same effect as sources like kelp, or in the garden bone and fish meal, etc...

    trace minerals

LOL, true! But they don't do it much when they have free choice pellets. I wish they would spend more time foraging the pasture than hanging around the porch staaaar-ving. We also raise chicks under broody mamas, and after seeing one at a local farm with leg problems limping and dragging its...

    trace minerals

Yes, i did read many studies that showed no difference when just added to the commercial feed, but I just feel my girls are not eating enough unless I add commercial pellets (they storm me when I bring out scraps or feed the dog and cats). I am increasing the amount of scraps and sprouts I am...

    trace minerals

that sounds just like what I am looking for: an organic source rather than rock powders. Most of the studies used the Bioplex organic trace minerals. I can easily mix kelp in with scraps sprouts and BOSS mash I make for them already. Can it go in their water? Where do you like to buy yours...

    slow to feather

I hope it is not a rooster, "she" is getting so pretty! comb still quite small and underdeveloped, so here's crossing fingers. But given how slow this one has been to mature, and the comb is still a tad larger than my pullets of the same age, I'm guessing pretty boy will end up as dog food if no...

    Hens With Naked Butts

problem solved! She got out of the pen with her protector dog and couldn't get herself back in one night, so her feather pile was a tad smaller than it should have been...never did figure out what it was. Tried antifungal, pesticide, and antimicrobial agents many times with treatments spread out...

    trace minerals

My birds free range 24/7 and so do not each very much chicken feed at all. In fact, I am trying to transition them to completely homemade feed and would like recommendations for a brand of trace minerals to offer free choice. I think they need it not only to round out their diet, but also...

    Lethargic chick, neck bulge

That is what I was wondering because originally she accepted them with her own chicks no problem. I watched her bed down tonight, and she was perfectly the same with her own chicks and the 3 remaining hatchery chicks, tucking them all in under her. So maybe it was some sort of disease or defect...

    slow to feather

Comb is still very small and immature. Are cochins this slow to mature? Entire body is still just down, and neck feathers just barely filled out

    Lethargic chick, neck bulge

she didn't make it. I am wondering if the hen pecked her because this morning my son pulled out another that she was pecking. They were introduced and she accepted them easily, but maybe she is singling them out now ???

    slow to feather

What breed of bird is this? I got a 'grab bag' of purebred hatching eggs. It is 3 months old already, hatched June 29th, and still is not fully feathered. It was very naked for a long time compared to the other hatchlings the same age. It is 4 toed, feathered shanks, yellow legs

    Lethargic chick, neck bulge

Our chick hatched Wednesday, 3 days ago, and this morning is very lethargic, sleeping, lying on her tummy, one or both legs limp out to the side or behind her. Her vent is clear, but she is under a broody hen who may be caring for it. I mixed up some vitamin water: filtered water, sea salt...

Comment by 'emmapal' in item 'Olive Egger'

I have one of the barred olive eggers that looks just like a barred rock but with a pea/rose comb. She does look striped. No idea on her parentage. She is a squat, chubby bird, so shorter than the rest of our flock. Her eggs are a smooth khaki green color.

    5-toed mystery chick

she is not fully feathered yet, so maybe. She does look a lot like this one, based on your suggestion http://memberfiles.freewebs.com/85/71/69487185/photos/Roseland-Haven-Farm-Colored-Dorkings/Single%20Comb%20Colored%20Dorking%20Hen%20(2).JPG

    5-toed mystery chick

I bought hatching eggs from a local breeder with a nice selection and variety of purebreds, but she was out of town so her husband helped me. He had no idea what egg was from what pen, but we had a broody and needed something in a hurry. We got one 5-toed bird. From feather sexing at 1-day, I...
