We've had different breeds over 13 years. Amazing how there are different personalities in chickens. We are like "helicopter parents" with our chickens monitoring them constantly and evaluating the "best" breeds to keep in our backyard. We started with two Silkie chicks given free to us by a...

Oh, that is so sad that your hen is so timid. I currently have a similar situation -- two adult Silkie hens (who have been together since babies) where one is aggressive and one is calmer and the calm one does her best to stay out of the aggressive Silkie's way -- they are 4-yrs-old now...

Review by 'Sylvester017' in article 'Aggressive Baby Chicks and How to Stop the Behavior'

4 years ago we picked up 2 DNA-sexed female Silkie chicks from a local Silkie breeder. One chick was so obnoxious and hyperactive she peeped all the way home from the breeder and kept picking at the other calmer chick. She was aggressive all through her juvenile, pullet, and adult growth. The...

I love Silkies with 5 of my own today (plus one old Dominique hen). I had the same issue as you -- 2 Silkies for 6 yrs and then one passed and left a lone Silkie. For biosecurity reasons you may find it difficult for someone w/chickens to take in an outside bird (for her and their biosecurity...

@kurby22 -- Wow you've got your work cut out for you! Running a breeding program is more hobby sport than money-maker. I guess like the rest of us you're chicken crazy too -- teehee! It's good to get breeding stock from several different sources. Buckaboo Farm gets their stock from different...

@kurby22 -- 4H Yeah! Good for you! And you say bantams are hard to find in Calif? I found NPIP/AI Clean Buckaboo Farm in Orange County area here in So Calif. They have Frizzles, Satins, Laced Satins, D'Uccles, plus other breeds. They're a small operation but have a good enough reputation to...

Hi Waterfowl :frow-- nothing much -- just old people :old stuff like going to doctor appts, watching Silkie chicks run around the kitchen cuz they're too big now for the brooder and the fowl (teehee) weather isn't safe enough to turn 'em outside, waiting for good weather to do gardening! Same...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

@CCsGarden -- the plastic egg cartons can be cheap dollar store quality so shop wisely and read reviews before purchase! I bought plastic egg cartons years ago of top quality, sturdy and fits XL eggs. I don't see that quality around any more :(

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I had an entire snow village with an N train setup and called it Bedford Falls (It's a Wonderful Life). It took me 2 days to set up with more village additions as I saw new beautiful things to add. A couple weeks up and then had to take it all down after Christmas. Wasn't worth the trouble...

@casportpony -- I call my peafowl peachicks until they are a year old. Once they are a year, I call them yearlings. Ducklings are ducklings until they feather out. Once feathered out, I call them juveniles. :D ____________________________________________ Teehee -- takes too long to say yearlings...

Topic of the Week - Gardening with Chickens

Mosquito netting -- what a great idea! It looks a lot like bridal tulle net. I wonder if they are the same material? For me I would go with whatever is cheaper yet covers my plants. So sad that we have to battle with insects and garden pests. We get snails/slugs during our wet weather but...

Not an entry. If you use magnifiers there is a teeny-tiny orange butterfly sitting on the Meyer Lemon's full-bloom white blossom smack-dab in the center of the photograph! It flew away before I could get a close-up of it. I didn't know butterflies could be so tiny!
