    Backyard Brahmas!!

autumnhearth, I'm so envious. I really miss the chicks. The lights are precious, and if I could do it all over again, that's all I would have. bumpercarr, thanks for all of the great info. I'll look into that broody hen thread. I don't want more chickens, and I can't imagine anyone wanting to...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Hi everyone, I haven't been here in over a year and go glad that S.D. BirdLady's thread has done so well. I ordered a mix of hatchery Brahma's last year. I have four lights, one buff, and three darks. The lights are by far the friendliest, followed by the buff(the other buff didn't make it), and...

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

I think I'm starting to get this whole molt thing. So if there is no rooster to damage the feathers, and the girls' feathers are in good shape they would only have a light molt?

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

Happy Chooks, "Didn't need a hard molt"? I'm curious as to why they need a hard molt. Seems like their feathers should last a long time. Or am I completely missing the point?

Winter is Coming! Checklists, tips, advice for a newbie

I put plastic around my run also. I bought a bunch of lath strips at the lumber yard and drilled three holes in each (stack a few to drill at once). I put one on each post (or anywhere I have wood in behind) on top of the plastic and use 1" screws with a pretty big head or use a washer. The lath...

For the new folks that haven't experienced a molt yet.

This is my girls'first molt, and I think two are just beginning to grow feathers their back. The third hen is just now starting to lose hers. Here are my questions: Is it true this happens each year? Is it always the same time of year? Is it always just as "hard" of a molt each year?

Comment by 'Vickis Girls' in article 'Helping your flock through molt'

Much appreciated and reassuring info. in this article! This is the second Fall for my three Spring '13 girls and I'm horrified at the way two of them look. Luckily Sophie hasn't lost many feathers and still gives us an egg every other day. I can't do much with three eggs a week, so I do scramble...

    Peanuts as a treat

Okay, I'll try that. I'd just love to get rid of this bag, and thought of my girls first. Thanks for the idea!

Carolinahen, what a cute little fluff ball! Still has the egg tooth. I miss that stage, and feel really jealous right now but have more coming end of April. Congrats!!! LilRedRoo, we're glad you found this thread, too. It's a great place to learn as well as talk about our backyard flock...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Summer, I can't quite remember...was it the problem of underweight hens? So maybe these younger ones are from a different line than the ones with health issues? Are these from a different hatchery? I hope it's a genetic thing like you said. Huntress, the BOSS is starting to sprout!!! Makes me...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

You'll probably have better luck in March. I think that's about when most breeders start hatching, but I've found that they only want to sell older pullets, so if it's just chicks you want, you might have to order hatching eggs. That's what I did, and every one turned out to be a cockerel(so...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

ocap, mine were hatched in June also, and started laying a week ago. Was the first little egg really small? I know how excited you are. Me too!!! Huntress, thanks for all the good sprouting info. All I could find was an enormous bag of corn, no oats or anything. Then I got back, saw your post...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

That's a really good point. Do all the Brahmas have the same parentage, or did they come from the same source? Huntress, I'm going to look up that info on sprouted grains, but thanks for the short version. No, I don't have Boss. I don't even know what it is. Please tell me. Also, do you put...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

That's so funny! Mine love cabbage too. Good ideas here, thanks. So do we need to cook the squash before they can eat it? So, tell me how to sprout grains if you would. Also, can you buy by the pound, or do you have to buy a big huge bag? When your sprouts are ready, do you divide it up over a...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I buy an organic soy free scratch and toss some a few hours before the chickens go to bed. It's made up of barley, cracked corn, wheat, and vegetable oil(it's 9% protein). I add whole sunflower seed and oats to the "salad" I toss early each morning. They all eat together, and seem to clean up...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Don't mean to take away from Summer's hens, just have a question. You mentioned that maybe they're eating too much scratch. I have a feeder in the coop with layer feed, and another one in the run with layer. I give a little bag of lettuce, apples, or whatever from the kitchen and also toss a...

Thanks RustyHen. For some reason I think I might feel dirty eating this first little egg, so I'm going to try to blow it out and decorate it. It's the most exciting thing to happen to me in a long time, and I can't wait to go check for another today. I only have three pullets, so might be awhile...
