    Large Fowl Cochin Thread

About five years ago we bought our first baby chicks. Among them was a tiny White Cochin female. Due to several predator attacks a few years ago we lost most of them. Considering cochins are supposed to be less able to avoid predators it is surprising that she is our last remaining hen from back...

Red Sex Links or Black Sex Links?

I know the birds used to get these black and red sex links vary but from what I have seen the red are more friendly and calm. The black ones are ok but are not interested in being friends at all. Not aggressive but very much not interested. The blacks I have had are probably better at escaping...

    Cuckoo Marans chick sexing?

I have four cuckoo marans chicks. I have noticed the wings on two have really bright white feather tips while on the other two the feather tips are dark with no white. They are one week old. The difference is very dramatic. Would this be an indication of gender?

I wish it showed better but that little bar of gold feathering above the larger band of gold is weird. It is on both sides and sticks out like little ears! This is a Gold Laced Cochin, I think. It could be one of my Partridge Cochins. Can someone explain to me what those tufts are?

    most friendly breed?

With my first batch that I raised from chicks, I played with them, sat with them, petted them yet when they were grown they barely tolerated me. I had cochins, brahmas, black sex linked, red sex linked and easter eggers. Of all of them one of the three easter eggers was slightly more friendly...

    Porcelain d'uccle thread

So the combs for males vary a lot in size? I have always just admired him but didn't even know what breed he was till I finally looked him up! He is so tiny compared to the other roosters. It was so sad when the little hen died. They made the cutest couple ever and stuck very close to each...

    Porcelain d'uccle thread

I had two of these from a mixed bunch of bantams. This one had a redder comb than the other, who was killed by a predator, so I assumed it was a he. After seeing the photos here now I do not know! It is almost a year old. I do not think it has ever crowed or laid an egg. I have other roosters...

    Meat chickens was a bust!

We butchered one. Some died or were killed. We have four left but now neither of us is willing to kill them. lol. I guess we are going to be keeping a few meat chickens for eggs. ^^ We will also get to hatch eggs since two are roosters!

    First Egg Countdown

The first and second eggs from my chickens. My mom calls these pullet eggs since they are so small. It looks to me like the second is larger than the first already. :) The first was about three days ago and the second was yesterday.

    First Egg Countdown

One of mine laid a pretty little brown egg today. :D She is about 19 weeks old and a black star if I am guessing right on the one that laid it. More red and larger comb and wattles. So glad they are finally starting to lay. Its been a long wait or so it seems!

Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Got the cutest little brown egg today! First one for my 19 week pullets. :D She is most likely one of the black stars since one of them has a very red and larger comb and wattle. :D Some of the others are catching up so we are getting eggs now! Well one anyway! She laid it by the door and not...

I believe you. I have three EE's that are several months older. They look little like they did even a month ago. Two are dark and one is light. Only similarities to before.

He is 11 weeks old. I have two that are very closely alike. I can not wait to see what they look like grown up. :) To me the roosters look like better type and color than the pullets but I am not that experienced to know yet. I would love to have a frizzle! Maybe next year. :)
