Ended Contest #12 Celebrity Look alike Contest! 5th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!

We named our chicken Grace Jones because she always had that fierce scowl like Grace. I wish I could find a better pic of when the real Grace had more of a Mohawk... Anyway, here is Grace Jones....and Grace Jones. :)

Help Please! Sick - pulled in legs, curled toes

My barred rock, 6 months old, since last night is just sitting there, won't walk. I looked her over this morning and she has no injuries, no hard tummy, looks great. When I set her down she pulls her legs up under her tummy - she doesn't extend her feet towards the ground. When she tries to...

Review by '' on item 'Golden Penciled Hamburg'

Phoenix is my GPH and she is very sweet but a little too shy. She won't eat from my hand like my reds do, but she will come near to partake in treats. She's also very smart - quick to follow when I start yelling, "Come here girls!" because she knows it will be worth it! :) She's one of the...

    Broody Battle

I haven't heard any of that about the legs. Guess you will just have to find out cause there's nothing you can do about it now, right? :) I read a post from a gal who had a chick with splayed legs. Someone told her to use a bandaid cut in half the long way then made into a loop to hold the...

dying chook coulors ( with food dye )

Well no matter what you do to that chicken, your siblings will tease. Make it pink and they will just say that figures cause he's gay. :) Anyhooo...... so how about trying that temporary hair color you can get at the drugstore? It even comes with an applicator so you can be more precise. And...

    Broody Battle

Can you put some eggs in another box so both will have eggs to sit on? Split them - give each hen two real eggs and two fake ones (use plastic easter eggs or golf balls). That way both can hatch real babies and wont fight over who is mom when babies are born. Yes the eggs are fertile as long as...

Cats eating chicken food & going through feed real fast.

That should last you two weeks if they are free ranging too. But you know that. Have you got a rooster? If not can you get one where you live? He might chase off other animals. Otherwise, don't lave food out all the time, just give them food at specific times. As for how often and how much...

Worried eggs will freeze in the winter

I've read a LOT about winterizing my coop - you guys are awesome, btw - but haven't seen this addressed: If I do not heat my coop, then how do I avoid the eggs freezing? I work full time with an hour commute so I'm gone10 hours. Or is it no big deal if the eggs freeze? Sorry if this is an...

Comment by 'jessesgirl' in album 'What am I?'

Golden Seabright. I had 6 of them and 6 Silver Seabrights. Got them at Bomgaars on sale for $1 each. Pain in the rear, not at all friendly. Show breed so small and infrequent eggs. Now I know why nobody was buying them. :) Got rid of all of them.

5 chickens refuse to go into coop at night

I have about 15 birds and I got 7 of them from a friend. They all integrated quickly and seamlessly and went into the coop to sleep from the start. Except one. She would hunker down in the tall grass near the coop. I would have to go pick her up and take her into the coop. But still she was...

    Does free ranging affect coloring?

Thanks for the info everyone! Their legs aren't flaky, just lighter colored. They FEEL the same, just different color. You guys are awesome - thank you!

    Does free ranging affect coloring?

I can't find anything about this so here goes with what is likely a dumb question: I have RIRs which I've raised since hatched. They have been free range since they were about 4 weeks. They eat everything (bugs, fruit, veggies, mice, etc.) and have bright yellow waxy legs/feet. I received 7 RIRs...
