    Double-yolker question

Recipes are based on using large eggs. The standard weight for a large egg is 2 oz. Weigh the double yoker. They vary a lot. If it's close to 4 oz, then yes, it would count as 2 large eggs.

    quail processing

Quote: It works great for us....and leaves a nice cavity for stuffing. I mix chopped apple, celery, onion - saute slightly. Then add grated cheese and bread crumbs, stuff into the cavity. We wrap them in bacon and secure with toothpicks. Then grill or roast them.

    How to vaccinate chicks?

I've given it to any age chicks and up to 18 month old adults. It won't help them if they've already been exposed. However, it does work if they're not yet exposed and infected. Here's how I look at it - it can't hurt and you might as well try. I'd do it for an adult bird over 18 mo that was...

    Culling older hens

Quote: You don't have to hide from me. I totally agree with you. We farm, it's our income. Non productive animals cannot stay. Everyone must earn their keep. Of course, our chickens are not pets, though we do enjoy them. Only my breeding roosters and broody hens have names. Even then, when...

    How to vaccinate chicks?

We give the vaccination in the upper thigh, just under the skin. DH holds them, I dampen the area with a cotton ball and alcohol, then lift the skin slightly and give the injection. I just find it easier to give in the thigh rather than back of the neck.

    quail processing

We're just finishing our first year with quail. We watched that exact same video last Summer and have been processing ours that way. Here's a pic of a couple after processing. Some people would prefer the skin on. But this method is quite quick and easy. Takes a minute or two per bird. We...

    Coturnix and cabbage

Quote: We give our Coturnix clover as a treat most often. I'm curious about the suet idea. We raise beef cattle and always get fat back from the processor. We use it as suet for the wild birds in Winter, and grind it to make venison hamburger, etc. I could share with the quail. Any...

Free Rangers: Talk to me about pest management

Mrs. K : I know exactly what you are going through. I don't leave mine locked up 24/7, but I don't let them out everyday. I have had chickens for 4 years now, and live on the prairie. I have EVERY predator, and they all LOVE chicken. One coon left a note, please leave BBQ sauce, I am tired of...

    what is the roo doing

Quote: LOL....yeah, I wish mine brought me money too! The roos I've rasied from chicks never dance at me. I'm the dominant "roo". They come right to me, like the hens, looking for treats, eat at my feet, etc. But I never handle them much - for that matter, I don't pick the hens up either...
