Well, color me excited! I just took the plunge and ordered 50 chicks for mid June. 47 of them are spoken for and I might close taking orders to allow for an inexperienced farmer If they all survive my abuse then extra meat in the pantry will be ok with us.
Yelcome! They also have a discount that increases at 50 bird increments. If enough friends want to get in on it, I'll order 50.
Really curious if anyone has dealt with them tho.
I kinda like the John Suscovich trough feeder from a 4" pvc pipe and will be building a couple suspended 5gal bucket waterers with several nipples around each one. If they go through more than 5 gal a day then I'll hang a 2nd one, but one should do and I can just do a swap out each morning...
WOW! There's a ton of info there FC. And THANKS for that, lots to ponder.
There won't be any litter turning once they're out on pasture, they'll be moved daily maybe twice depending on their output. Part of my continuing pasture/hay field improvement plan. At 2 sq/ft per bird the 8x12...
Yes, they're like little piggies with no "I'm full" switch. I gather the 12 on 12 off feeding schedule seems to be the popular option. These will be on grass in a hoop house/tractor. I'm thinking of an 8x12 cattle panel high tunnel that will double as a cold frame/greenhouse until the dinos...
I'm sure this is covered multiple times here, but my search skills are very basic at best so....
I'm planning to run some pastured broilers (CornishX) this summer, but want to know;
1) How much starter feed per bird? ( I read somewhere they'll consume 17-18 lbs of all feed each over their...
Hey LG,
Wish I could nail our arrival time down, but we're at the mercy of the immy process. Every time I think we have everything set they come up with more docs we have to send in.
At this rate I'm praying for June or July. A little late to get started with chicks, but we'll have to make...
Ah, no worries then. Hopefully we'll be home in time for the Fairs and meet a few fellow "Flocksters" and also in time to get an order into Cackle.
Still planning to do 50 SR of Doms if we get things together I'll ping you before I put the order in (if you want some chicks, that is). I...
You gonna brood some Doms LG?
Me n the Missus still don't know when we'll be heading for the homestead and we might need some pullets close to laying.
Bought some land in Dixmont, btw. Can't wait to get after it and order some chicks.
Geoff's tractor was run on a weekly move schedule.
Once a week they moved it ahead 12 meters then cleaned out the DL from the shelter and started a new compost cage with the litter, manure and kitchen scraps and tossed in more scraps daily until the next move.
The piles got turned once a...
Lots of flies mean lots of high protein larvae for the ladies too.
I just read Harvey Usery's book recently and he has some helpful tips on how to grow larvae for the chooks.
What's wrong with her?
She's completely unhinged and out of touch with any sense of reality.
She seriously needs a hug. Around the neck. Until she passes out.
This tale makes me think (I can't imagine why) of a book by a traveling lady Minister. Couldn't We Just Kill Them and tell God...
I TRIED to eat a roo my wife bought at the market this summer.
The thing tasted worse than liver and was tough as an old shoe. I let her gnaw on the rest of it herself and kindly request she not do that again.
I am, however, quite interested in caponizing. I'm definitely going to look...
Here's a helpful temp chart to use as a guideline.
I generally run my pork loins (from Sam's, cut in half) up to 165F @ ~225F smoker temp for 10-12 hours.
Meat Temp Chart
Looow & Sloooow. That's how BBQ cookers get that pulled pork so tender it falls apart with a nudge. BBQers (as opposed to grillers) generally cook larger cuts like a pork butt at around 200 -225 for hours and hours, like 10-15 or more. A whole broiler would likely be done in 4-5 hrs. The low...
