    Winter thread:Chickens

UPDATE: I am removing the hanging suet feeder for my chickens. I noticed one of my Cochins has a beak injury and several others have what appears to be bruising on their beaks in the same location. 😓 It's my best guess as to why these injuries are occuring

    Breed suggestions for docile roosters?

I have had a few different breeds of roos. The worst roo I had was an Easter Egger. He was fine toward people but horrible to the hens. My daughter has a buff orpington roo and he is a sweetheart. Buff orpington would fit your need of a clean footed breed with a nice disposition. They are a...

    Winter thread:Chickens

Under the covered portion of the run I provide: • treat balls filled with black oil sunflower seeds & black soldier fly larvae • dust bath • suet holder filled with veggies and/or fruit • children's picnic table I enclosed the covered portion with plastic to provide a wind break and keep the...

    Dust baths and snowy weather

I use a plastic mixing pan (used in masonry). I tried using an old tire but it wasn't big enough for them to dust bathe. A portion of the run is covered. During the winter I use thick plastic to keep the snow and wind out. I used 1/3 dirt, 1/3 all purpose construction sand, 1/3 food grade...

My neighbor is complaining about my rooster :/

A sound maker is a device that makes noise such as rain, babbling brook, nighttime crickets, white noise, etc. Here is one on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Portable-Relaxing-Soothing-Charging-Auto-Off/dp/B00A2JBMRE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Sound+Makers&qid=1632336511&sr=8-3 There are...

Review by 'JLS' on item 'Pullet-Shut Automatic Chicken Door Chickendoors.com'

I am a very satisfied Pullet-Shut customer. I have been using this door since 2012. It simply works no matter how cold it gets, even in Maine winters. The photo sensor and solar panel make the operation of this door effortless and reliable. I wholeheartedly recommend this door for everyone.

My neighbor is complaining about my rooster :/

I am the OP of this thread. What worked for me was to give my neighbor a sound maker and eggs. I was empathetic to his concern and it made things better. Maybe wrap it up in a gift bag 🙂 If you have more than 1 rooster, that will cause the roosters to crow more frequently throughout the day. If...

EcoGlow 600 is so very hot

I am having the very same concern as you. My new Brinsea 600 feels extremely hot to the touch. Did the new replacement Brinsea feel extremely hot like your first one? I have chicks arriving in less than 2 days.

Official BYC Poll: Do You Clip Your Chickens' Wings?

I will clip only one wing and only if the bird manages to fly out of the chicken run. Otherwise I don't clip their wings. In my experience, having birds fly out of the run is very rare and has only occured when they are pullets. Also, I find that clipping one wing, just one time, is all it...
