Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

IF you are on facebook, there are heaps. Best bet is to search for the breed you want, find the Aussie thread for it and ask. It is possible to bring breeds in from overseas, but it takes 18 months and several hundred thousand dollars

I'll try and get some better pictures of the flock in a few months once they mostly have proper feathers.

Find out what her favorite traeats are and sit out in the yard with her some where and place a few out in front of you. After a while she will get brave enough to eat them, and after that she will start to trust you more if you do it often

Depending on what breeder it comes from it could be white or light brown eggs. Most of mine start laying around 14 -20 weeks old.

    Silkiecuddles Chat Thread!!! ANYBODY welcome!!!

Not all hens have trouble with large numbers. My little silkies can hatch 20 with no problems. The only issue is then they loose half of them in the fist 2 weeks after hatch.

She sounds like she trying to decide where she wants to lay her eggs. They should not go broody before they lay at least 2 eggs. You will know she broody when she spends most of the day sitting in the nest box and yells at you if you get close. My silkies are good layers when they are not broody...

Congrats. I'm going okay. I'm finally starting to get some silkies born that meet standards, and I'm finally getting some frizzled that have darkish skin n and combs, and I might finally have my first chick with both silkie and frizzled feathers.

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

With some hens even lifting them does travel all the chicks. I can move my hens and after I put them down a tiny beak will appear from out of the feathers somewhere, so be aware that even if you pick up a broody, it may still be holding on to chicks under its wings

It is probably tucked securely under the hen, or if it died it will be stuck in someone's foot.

The drop in temperature can be useful if you get a lot of chicks fully formed that don't make it out of the shells

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

If they are good Broodies I'd just turn off the incubator and give the hens the eggs

The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

My official count is 1 hatched out of 24 set. Got lucky because lightning heard the baby and decided she wanted it, so I don't have to brood a solo baby.

The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

Yes it's normal for the chicks to be tumbling the other eggs around. As long as the pipped beaks can't get stuck in the incubator grill its fine

The 8th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-a-long!!!!

I've been working with the groups trying to get sizzles and frilkies into standards . For the sizzle it should be a silkie in every way except that it does not have silkie feathers. It is either smooth feathers or frizzled feathers. A frilkies should be any chicken that has feathers that are...
