    Ducks and Cannabis

I just returned to this topic and wanted to say that birds indeed have endocannabinoid systems just like humans, other mammals, and reptiles. Even fish and mollusks have endocannabinoid systems.

Indian Runners and Saxonys getting along?

I'm not bringing in runners, I had someone who wanted to adopt her into their flock of runners. I'm sorry I really wasn't being very clear with my messaging earlier, I am squeezing in trying to attend to my duck issues with doing my taxes today. I'm keeping the KC because he is a drake and I...

Indian Runners and Saxonys getting along?

I'm near Portland Oregon. Where are you? I'm on the fence about it; I would be sad to see her go, but I just want what will be best for her. Rehoming is traumatic, and she had a big trauma last fall - she was a tattered lost/stray who we rescued - but I also think her daily life here with my...

Indian Runners and Saxonys getting along?

sorry, that was not so clear. The potential new flock is Indian Runners. Duck I'm rehoming is a Saxony. My drake is a khaki c.

Indian Runners and Saxonys getting along?

yes, my drake continues to bully her so aggressively that I started exploring the idea of re-homing her in hopes she would find a gentler life. I really like her and hate to see her go, but I have not found anything that works to stop her being constantly beat up - it's not just over-mating, he...

Indian Runners and Saxonys getting along?

Will a single Saxony hen do well in a mostly Indian Runner flock? There are some muscovys too, but I hear they are a bit different from other ducks and keep to their own more.

    Flavors ducks hate?

I'm returning to this thread from long ago because our drake (same drake) is being seriously overmating some of our hens this season - I'm wondering if the sock deterred mating or just protected the back of the head/neck feathers? And also, how did you keep it from just slipping down?

    Ducks and Cannabis

From the Thailand study... "No abnormal behaviour was observed in the chickens, Chompunut said: “At the level of intensity we gave them, it wouldn’t get the chickens high.” The levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the plant’s psychoactive substance which makes people feel high, and...

    Ducks and Cannabis

I don't do well with it myself either, but I know that medicines and herbs affect different animals differently. I think starting with CBD is smart.

    Ducks and Cannabis

I will add on here that most dogs that eat THC/cannabis in the form of like, a gummy or a cookie they find on a walk are not horribly affected - they tend to be wobbly and lethargic for a few days, and are often nauseous, but they don't require medical intervention. I think they would have to...

    Ducks and Cannabis

Understandable concerns. THC is very toxic to dogs - I've also known multiple dogs who have ended up at the vet due to eating edibles out on walks. CBD is not toxic to dogs and lots of people are having success with it. The Thailand story makes me think that THC may not have adverse effects on...

    Calm a drake?

@Miss Lydia I actually decided to create a second conversation on the topic of THC/CBD/Cannabis and ducks over here https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/ducks-and-cannabis.1613203/

    Ducks and Cannabis

Okay, earlier today I posted about my overly hormonal drake displaying too much aggressive excessive mating toward one of my hens. I was asking if there were any tips for calming him down. @Miss Lydia suggested cannabis based dog calming treats. Which led me to wonder about THC and CBD in...

    Calm a drake?

do we know if THC and/or CBD is safe for ducks? Interesting idea and definitely worth a try if safe

    Calm a drake?

I can totally understand this approach and in theory really like it. Sadly my ducks do a lot of mating on land (as opposed to in water) and we have had leg injuries, and for instance, my current hen who is being over-mated is getting super ragged on her neck, does her best to run away from him...

    Calm a drake?

The idea of him enjoying looking at himself is hilarious - he's so fancy looking right now! I'm surprised they don't attack the drake in the mirror though. I would have zero drakes as well if I could, but he is here and I'm fond of him despite what a hassle he is and wouldn't want him to end...

    Calm a drake?

Thank you; I have found that when I separate the hen he just focuses in on another girl. He mates them all, but there is always one being harassed way more than the others and clearly suffering for it.

    Calm a drake?

Well Mr. Clove has put on his nuptial feathers (so cute those tail curlicues!) and gone into full crazy randy drake mode. The problem is that even though he has 5 hens, he has a tendency to over-mate one. At the moment I have him penned, but I feel sad for him not getting to forage, and well...

    Antibiotics Antibiotics Antibiotics

Thank you - my local feed store listed Corid when I asked what antibiotics they carry - I had never heard of it, but didn't really look further than seeing that it didn't appear to be used for injuries. Makes sense that it's not an antibiotic.
