    Ground Cover/Forage in shaded run?

What a wonderful idea! I just inherited a set of old saw horses and I'm sure I can find a pallet to get things started.

    Ground Cover/Forage in shaded run?

Thank you for this! I didn't realize you could feed a higher protein feed after they were 20 weeks old. I'm already providing crushed oyster shells and grit. Will start looking for a higher protein feed.

    Ground Cover/Forage in shaded run?

The shells are plenty hard. I have a rubber mat on the bottom of the nesting boxes, but I've recently added a bunch of pine shavings to each box and that seems to be helping. I've also added fake eggs to each box. I'm really hoping they don't learn to eat their own eggs... That would be...

    Ground Cover/Forage in shaded run?

I have just ordered portable non-electric fencing from Premier One. I plan on moving it around some, but I'm limited on space. That's a good idea though.

    Ground Cover/Forage in shaded run?

The chain link is 6ft. tall. I'm not worried about them escaping, and it's going to be a day time run. The only predators I'm worried about are hawks. I'm planning on putting up some netting between the trees to prevent hawk strikes

I've had several breaks...

    Poopy Butt

Everyone is currently getting Producers Pride layer mini pellets. They love lettuce so I have been giving lettuce scraps and Grubblies for treats. It's the only way to get them back in the run. They don't have any access to grass only an enclosed spot under the trampoline to explore and scratch...

    Poopy Butt

My Silkie Roo does this thing where he poops and it dribbles down into his butt feathers and creates this lovely mass of coagulated poop between his legs. None of my other chickens including 3 other Silkies have this problem. I'm definitely concerned about Fly Strike, but after multiple baths...

    Mud abatement using leaf litter?

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't Cedar and Walnut wood chips toxic to Chickens? That would be my first concern about using anything offered from tree services and cabinet shops. I love the idea of free though!!

    Its Sink or Swim Time!

Hello BYC, After 7 years of debating and lurking, and reading "Raising Chickens for Dummies" I finally took the plunge into backyard chicken keeping. I've second-guessed absolutely everything from coop design, to brooder setup, to what type of feeder and waterer to put in. Do I line the run...
