    Got snakes?

Learning.. just read they will eat hens if there’s not easier food 😳😱my client doesn’t mind sharing the eggs because black snake will eat the copperheads (if it’s hungry).. bet she doesn’t know it will eat a hen I’ve been helping her 8 years and this is the first year I’ve seen a snake

    Got snakes?

They told me there is at least one black snake getting the eggs 😱 I met this one today. Used a Chuck-It dog toy (flexible plastic long handle with special cup on end designed to throw a small ball a great distance) to retrieve the ones you see

UPDATE: Help! Did I do bad? Broody

Thank you for this option. I have never hatched before, so I didn’t even think of it. Client has a friend that will adopt all (country living is the best)

UPDATE: Help! Did I do bad? Broody

I don’t know how to destroy eggs. Especially with embryos or nearly formed chicks

UPDATE: Help! Did I do bad? Broody

She’s out of town 10 more days.. and she (let) the bird get broody.. if I knew today was day 3 or 4 but it might be past 7. How does the flock handle chicks? Can’t they stay with the mother hen (like natural birds)?

UPDATE: Help! Did I do bad? Broody

She left yesterday and she’s only keeping hens and goats from her late husband’s retirement adventure. She doesn’t collect everyday and that baffles me. The help only feeds them in the morning and opens the pen. So he knows this one has been on eggs for more than a couple days. Can I give them...

UPDATE: Help! Did I do bad? Broody

UPDATE: I reached out to my client and seems I have stressed for nothing. She has a contact that will take all her oopsies (it has happened before). She did give me some guidance how to identify new eggs in the clutch (by marking the current ones) and remove those - and for goodness sakes don’t...

    Soft shell egg

One of my 1yo ISA Brown laid a soft egg today (yesterday?) I found what looked like a deflated balloon in the box. Getting average 3 eggs/day from 4 hens (same age). Thought one was laying somewhere outside the coop because I found an egg in the yard a few days ago. 🤷🏻‍♀️

What's the temperature where you are???

It’s a beautiful 78*F with lower humidity (it has rained for the past 5 days!) My girls are preparing the next garden space (corn & beans)

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Snakes are sneaky. Is there a tree overhead (or even very near)

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Oh yes! They come up to my kitchen door peering in to let me know they are ready to go in 😂 their pen is open so they can put themselves up (if I’m not home when they are ready) and I lead them to the coop and lock the pen. Coop has a square pen with the housing on top. Hens enter through the...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hi! My 4 ISA Browns laid all winter 🙌 while I started building a food forest.. I’ve decided to let the chickens continue to roam and I fenced off the garden areas. So far so good!

    First? Hawk attack (we’re ok)

I think they’re ok. I’ve found them in the ivy brush many times and they typically run across open areas flapping (making themselves bigger?). So maybe it isn’t their first encounter

    First? Hawk attack (we’re ok)

Thank you. One was safe in the nest box. It’s been below freezing here in central NC for a few days. No doubt the hawk is hungry. :/

    First? Hawk attack (we’re ok)

A hawk just came after my chickens 😱😱😱 They ran for cover but there are feathers in the cover brush. I reacted quicker than the dogs (3 Pomeranian/terrier mix). Hawk flew off and I put hens back in coop. I didn’t see which one(s) were involved. Other than blood, what injuries should I look for?

How cold is too cold for my chickens?

I know this is an old thread but we are getting our first burp of freezing weather in central NC (hasn’t even FROST yet!! But temps plunging to 28F (was 85F for daytime high two days ago!) My 4 ISA Browns are in a construction with a half floor elevated housing.. they sleep in the bedding and on...

Topic of the Week - Chicken behaviour and flock dynamics - Part 1 - The pecking order

This is my first flock, 4 ISA Browns. They seem to be even keel, but the reddest one will challenge my smallest dog (terrier mix). In her defense, the dog started it. It’s just amusing that she recognizes him and approaches with attitude! Not so with my other two dogs. And the hens respect the...

    Neighbour attracting foxes

Turn in the neighbor. Fox are not pets. I don’t like “invisible fence”.. if your dog is attacked in his own yard he can’t get out. A local dog owner (not neighbor) lost her dog when something entered the yard and no one could get to the door to let it in. Horrifying.
