I am so impressed how black the Cayuga is! My coop is a stand alone building. We have a duck door they go in and out. Planning to install an automatic door this weekend to help protect the girls from weather and coyotes at night. Sand might work as a base layer.
I love your ducks - soooo beautiful!! What kind are they?? The idea of using sand might work for our girls! The wind can whip sometimes by the pond and the shavings go everywhere.
In an effort to keep the egg laying in the nesting boxes, we feed them inside their house and then lock them in for the night. This seems to work for them. I like the bucket idea! We might give that a try this winter when we move them up from the pond. I will see if the straw suits them better.
Our girls are very kind - love eating out of your hand. They are gentle and come when called! A very quiet breed. They are great eaters! They will snatch bugs right out of the air. They devour the tadpoles and I have seen them swallow a frog whole! We have had a great experience with them...
Thank you!! Love these girls. I can't get enough of them. We made sure to put in a shelf above the nesting box to "catch" anything that might accidentally fall.
I am looking for a creative way to contain all the water that seems spray all over my ducks house. When they drink they just splash all over the place and my shavings get soaked. The ducks have a huge pond to play in but I keep fresh clean water in the house that they drink during mealtime...
Speaking of Muscovy being nicer... I am thinking about getting a drake for my two lady muscovy. I imagine one drake will be plenty - but do you know the best way to introduce them?
I found an old rabbit hutch with a plastic catch... is makes a perfect water contain for both the chickens and the ducks. The ducks wade into it and dunk, the chickens will drink out of it when it hasn't been too "muddied". But I also give them fresh clean water in a auto fill container.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to owning ducks. Grew up with chickens, geese, ducks and everything in-between, but this is my first time having my own ducks as an adult.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have two muscovy ladies.
(3) What...
