Ducks won't touch their gravel type oyster shell calcium

I'm pretty sure mussel shells would work fine. Clam shells are probably too thick.

Ducks won't touch their gravel type oyster shell calcium

Still no crushed oyster shell available in California. I made the mistake of buying Manna Pro 'oyster shell and coral calcium' from Amazon. It's 99% coarse destroyed coral reef gravel with a few pieces of what appears to be clam shell. The ducks don't touch it. Fortunately, while previously they...

Nope it got worse and worse. I gave three of them, including the very expensive Appleyard to a Farm Animal Rescue Farm.

    Niacin Deficiency in Waterfowl

Yep! Poultry starter intended for chickens and allies needs to be supplemented for ducklings. I've always used brewers yeast intended for supplementing horse feed, about $12 / 2# tub. Also from quite an early stage they eagerly take various plant matter, wild lettuce seems to be the favorite.

    Silver Appleyard Decibel level

More details about the panicking behavior. The trigger was if I was anywhere in sight. The Appleyard and three runner ducks would crouch, fluff their feathers and start to squawk so loud my ears would hurt and dash madly to and fro in the pen or in the yard. Once the panic started the two other...

    National oyster shell shortage?

The pet/feed store guy mentioned this nationwide oyster shell shortage just yesterday. I'm going to look for some appropriately crushed limestone - probably the stuff intended for gardening would work.

    Silver Appleyard Decibel level

Yes, the extremely loud squawking is more likely when the feed dish is empty, keeping it full doesn't prevent it. They've got an automatic waterer (I don't know how anybody would keep ducks without one...) As I've mentioned, I've had ducks for years, the runners, swedes, and kakhi campbells...

    Silver Appleyard Decibel level

I've kept ducks for years, runners, khaki campbells, swedes, etc. and had pretty good luck with egg production. This year I got a pair of Silver Appleyard ducklings. They're gorgeous. However, the duck has started squawking so loud I can hear her 1/4 mile away. Any idea what triggers this behavior?

    Hello Fellow Birds

I'm Karl in San Jose California. I've raised various fowl, chickens for example, since childhood back in rural Maryland. More recently I've kept geese and ducks, geese for garden maintenance and ducks for eggs. In the past I've lost birds to bobcats (perhaps a lynx - it was huge) but now have a...
