I got my SS as an older pullet and I'm sad that I didn't get to raise her as a baby because I wish she was less skittish. I would love to cuddle her because she's so cute and fluffy. She's a pretty consistent layer (about 5 eggs per week) and she's pretty quiet for the most part. She's sometimes...
I have two Wyandottes, one Blue Wyandotte and one Golden-laced Wyandotte. Love my Blue Wyandotte for her looks and she's a pretty consistent layer. Her only problem is she is very noisy. I like to call her Willow the Whiny Wyandotte. She's a diva and let's everyone know when she's laid her eggs...
Love my sweet BR hen. She is second in command but is much more docile than our top chicken and other hens. She's a great layer too, on average 5-6 eggs a week. She's still in her first year of laying so they're usually medium sized eggs but I'm hoping they get a little bigger once she's older.
My Barred Rock was a bully when I was introducing my Speckled Sussex. It took them about a month for the chasing to stop. The Sussex is still the bottom chicken in the pecking order but there's no more outright bullying.
I don't know if you're still looking for recommendations but Sussex chickens are a great dual purpose bird. They used to be the meat bird of England and are excellent layers as well. Granted their eggs are a bit on the smaller side (or at least mine are) but my Speckled Sussex lays 5 eggs a week...
I've thought about buying these as no one seems to be laying in the nesting boxes, but I wanted to wait and see if they got it without them. But a two for one purpose seems like I should just go ahead and get them.
I thought I had got there quick yesterday as I ran out as soon as I heard an egg song but it was cracked anyway. Today I wasn't home so I couldn't get out there as quick but it doesn't seem to matter.
My BR laid her first egg yesterday and the top was cracked. Today it happened again. Is she pecking them? No other hens are laying cracked eggs and they all lay in the coop or under the coop in their chicken craters.
Whelp I found a second egg that looks identical to the small darker egg... Which means there is a third pullet laying and idk who! Butt checks tonight!
Hmm that is a possibility as well. My SS has a bigger comb than my RIR. My SS is the skittish one so I haven't done a butt check but I've seen her in the coop messing around more than the other pullets.
Hello backyard chicken keepers! I've finally got some layers in my flock and I'm so excited, got my first egg (the lighter one) on Friday and the second egg (darker one) today. I'm trying to figure out who laid which eggs. I'm guessing that the lighter egg (43g) was laid by my BR and the darker...
