    Predator attack

We had a predator attack today. I can’t find one chicken(or any sign that it got taken, ie the explosion of feathers) but found a different explosion of feathers. I happened to find the hen in the coop and was shocked. Something clearly tried to get ahold of her. Thankfully she was a Cochin and...

    Weak chick, home hatched

Hey there! Suggestions wanted! I’ve hatched a few chicks in our incubator the last few days, and one doesn’t seem to be doing well. It’s sleeping much more than the others and is pretty unsteady on its feet. It is also struggling to keep its eyes open. It hatched on time(21days) and although...

911!!! CRUSHED 21 DAY EGG, CHICK STILL ALIVE! ASSISTING HATCH!

Oh man, I can’t believe I didn’t update!!! Chick survived and is thriving! I wish I had a specific picture, but it was so difficult to tell all of our black chicks apart. We had 13 hatch and stay earth-side, 11 of which were mostly all black 😂

New member first hatch gender help

I’d say the first and second are definitely cockerels. Three I feel 80% sure as well. The fourth feels 50/50.

Help! Red blob on chicken, freshly hatched!

Yeah, I know it will be okay without food or water for another day-ish. And I’m sure if it doesn’t absorb, there’s a good chance it would heal over and shrivel and fall off… I did just take a closer look, and there seems to be fluid filled bubbles around the base, on the skin. It doesn’t really...

Help! Red blob on chicken, freshly hatched!

Update on this chick: the sack looks smaller, but as we’re at about 24 hours since hatch, I’m feeling doubtful that it will be fully absorbed. It’s hardening, do we think there’s a chance it could just dry up and fall off? I’m hoping to get this chick up with its siblings in the brooder this...

Help! Red blob on chicken, freshly hatched!

Phew! Okay. Thank you. I wasn’t sure if that was the case or if it had herniated or something. Yeah the other chick hatched 24 hours ago, so it was chasing it around and most definitely would have caused damage. Other chick got taken up to our brooder to join the other chicks and our Mama hen 👍🏻

911!!! CRUSHED 21 DAY EGG, CHICK STILL ALIVE! ASSISTING HATCH!

Thank you so much! Little baby slept super hard for about four hours, and then started to get active and Wiggley with the other chicks. I took her out, removed the yolk sack, and now she is all fluffed up and happy as a clam! I will post a successful fluffy chick picture in just a minute! Felt...

911!!! CRUSHED 21 DAY EGG, CHICK STILL ALIVE! ASSISTING HATCH!

Well, I took it out to moisten the membrane and remove a few more pieces of shell. The membrane was starting to shrink wrap and adhere, so I worked it back slowly with a toothpick and wet q-tip. Got to the umbilical cord, and the yolk sack was fully absorbed! Looked like a tiny bit of blood...

911!!! CRUSHED 21 DAY EGG, CHICK STILL ALIVE! ASSISTING HATCH!

Help! Went up to check on Mama hens progress with brooding and to remove shells of chicks I knew had hatched. Two eggs had been crushed, one had passed but one was still breathing and moving! I’ve brought it down to our incubator. It pipped almost 24 hours ago, so it’s not too far off. I’ve...

Experiences with reflective tape for Hawk deterrent

Oh yes, that’s how we usually do it. As much as it’s obviously not desirable to lose a chicken to predation, we are resigned to the fact that we may lose 1-2 per year. We are in a forested area with a lot of underbrush, so our chickens aren’t as easy Pickens as those on fields I’m just looking...

Experiences with reflective tape for Hawk deterrent

Oh yes, we have 20 currently, and will be upping that number to about 30 this summer. We lose one or two from time to time and although unfortunate, hawks are not as bad as coyotes. You can count on a single coyote to go on a rampage… one year they took out 6 in a single attack. At least a hawk...

Experiences with reflective tape for Hawk deterrent

Yes, I have their main fenced run covered with netting. They currently Get to free range outside of that space, and this year I’m fencing a 2000sqft area for them to deter coyote sneak attack. Since hawks are primarily migratory at our property, I was hoping that scare tactics might just cause...

Experiences with reflective tape for Hawk deterrent

Would love to know about your experiences using hawk tape/reflective streamers for hawk deterrents? Good and bad, stories below please!!! Our area is directly in the path of migratory hawks, very high traffic, in the spring and fall. looking to find some decent ways to possibly deter them a...

    Chicken swallowed a peach pit

Wow, interesting! I had a chicken with impacted crop last year and no one mentioned egg whites at all. I’ll put that in my mental medical rolladex 👍
