Comment by 'Cinderloowho' in article 'Adventures in Hatching - When Things Don't Go Quite as Planned'

I needed this right now! I had a very broody hen earlier this spring. I felt so bad for her, I shoved a random egg under her, then I ordered fertilized eggs online. I have a rooster, but more kinds are always fun, right? Well I don't know if it was covid 19 or what, but the eggs took forever...

Help Quail chick hatched early can I open during lockdown?

I'm starting to think incubating is more of an art than a science! I read all the info I could find before I bought eggs and an incubator and then proceeded to do everything pretty much wrong. My purchased eggs took way too long to arrive, so I figured I was doomed anyway, but I put them in the...

    Chicken Math Stories!

I too was going to be content with my 16 hens and 1 roo (he was an accident!) But then my buff orpington went completely broody. I felt so sorry for her, she didn't even have eggs under her! So I stuck one under her just because she made me sad. Then when chicks came in at the store I got 6 to...

    Chicken Math

Yup, my husband said 6. He kept saying 6. So I got 6+6+6! That was last year. So this year I got 6 more. Then I hatched 3 and still have a broody hen sitting on a clutch, so who knows! Chicken math!

I kind of figured that out after I posted! It is s beautiful space! I'm like you, my coop is kind of sad in comparison, but I'm still pretty proud of it! It's amazing what 1 person can do when they want something badly enough!

How do you keep the chickens from pooping on the chairs? Mine think anything they can get on is fair game!

I love my buff orp. She's such a sweet girl! She went broody a few weeks ago with nothing under her. I felt bad and stuffed an egg under her. Then I bought chicks to fool her with. Before I could get the chicks in with her, the egg hatched! I had no idea it was fertile! Guess it was meant to be...

    Chicken Math

hahahaha, my husband finally relented this spring to let me have chickens...he said we'll start with 6, but he kept saying it, so I ordered 6 for everytime he told me I could get 6! That was 18. They arrived yesterday, and they are so cute and so precious that I already want more! I didn't know...

Good small dogs for protecting flock

I've had lots of different dogs and the one I'd pick would be a border collie or BC mix. They are herd dogs, so they may try to "herd" the chickens, but they're generally very gentle and VERY smart. A lot of small dogs have a stronger prey drive than their larger counterparts. I did have a...

    Garter Snake infestation

I can honestly say that we do have an infestation of garter snakes. One night we came home about dusk and the yard next to the driveway was full of them. Another day I walked past this old shed that was in our yard, it had a hitch on the front of it, it was meant to be winched onto a trailer and...

    Spruce and Cottonwood shavings?

I know this is an older thread, but I was really interested to read it as I have huge cottonwoods in my yard that drop leaves, twigs and branches. I'm getting my first chicks in a couple of weeks and I had thought that running all the stuff through my chipper would make good bedding and be a use...

    feeling the need for chicks!!

that's what I hear! I have small dogs, so I've already been thinking along those lines! I never let my dogs out unprotected as we have owls that will swoop right into our yard, among other things! So any chicks that come to live here will definitely have to have security!!
