Winter is coming...What is left on your to-do list?

Although our winters are generally mild, I still have to do a little prep. I have to reroof one of the smaller coops. I have a fraying tarp on it now (I know, I was being lazy) I noticed all the tiedowns are swinging freely in the breeze so it's past time. I usually use corrugated wood strips...

    Counting your chickens

I have between 30-35 chickens, including 2 definite and 2 maybe roosters. (I gotta say, it's hard to get a good count of moving chickens). I plan on selling the Lavender Orpingtons before winter because they are the ones struggling most in this weather -- I won't be going forward with them next...

    Lavendar orp roos?

2 lavenders, I think they are roos. Both from Mt.Healthy hatchery order. 3 pics of each and they are both vicious little peckers who did not want to cooperate at all. Number1: Number 2

    Surgoinsville, TN proposed chicken ordinance

Copied from another site but I looked at the local Tennessee newspaper and it is, indeed, copy of proposed ordinance. The up to $50/day fines proposed in it seem a bit steep and unrealistic. I don't see any "grandfathering in" of people who already own chickens. I would be raising all kinds of...

Chick stuck in the chain link

I have been using this run for 30+ years and never had this happen before. This slightly grown out chick has stuck herself in the chain link with one wing on each side of the fence and she's about a foot off the ground. I tried loosening her from inside the run but the only thing to grab & pull...

    Water-added Supplements (Vi-tal)

I gave the chicks grow gel the first 6 hours after unboxing and then they started on medicated crumbles. It is day 3 and they are all doing well. Is a water-added supplement necessary? The hatchery suggested Vi-tal Water Vitamin, Electrolyte and Mineral Supplement. I bought a pack but it seems...

2nd baby goat this season, a boy

He's a wiggly boy, another single & born late yesterday. He's a whopping 3 3/8 lbs. but already running his mom crazy. Mom's nervous and protective, she lost last year's baby early and tried to steal everyone else's kids. He'll be for sale.

    Buffalo Gnats

Starting to see people in So.Louisiana complaining about gnats/black gnats/buffalo gnats. I haven't had issues with them so far this year. How do you handle them? I use a strong fan across the top of the brooder & chick pen and Pyrhana spray every 3 days (I empty it out first). This has worked...

    Okra seed?

Someone gifted me about half a bucketful of okra seed they collected last year and didn't use. It's not treated or even commercially sourced. Any reason not to give it to the flock?

    Farm Chickens

Chickens at work, scratching up the matted hay under a hay rack. This chicken's name is Emu, large flightless bird, because a possum removed it's left wing. Chickens at play, climbing trees... I may be disturbing their nap...

Someone dumped this guy in my driveway

I don't have any birds like this so help me out: I believe it's a roo, he has extra toes and they are feathered. He's rather short but not a bantam. Fairly calm and very hungry.

    I screwed up.

While installing overhead bird netting I inadvertently made a possum tunnel. They used to could not get from the barn into the coop/pen but I attached the net to the outside wall of the barn. The idea was to give the birds a hawk-free run from the chicken pen to the barn. Mr...
