Hi all, Thanks for the poke, i've been super busy, well keeping myself busy to stop me thinking about them, cause i dont have any chooks, and has taken a while to think about doing it again.
Something broke into our coupe and killed all my feathered friends, was very weird though and im...
we buy hay direct from the farmers, so much cheaper than buying straw from the hardware/feed store!
there are also different types of hay, depending on what animals you keep on your property
this is the splash and the older whites do have the same colour legs as this splash.
yes the black does have the black legs and seems to be alot slower on feathering out was also the last one to hatch, may even be a cockerel now looking at the comb but has the same feather pattern on the wings...
i use a cage which i made a liner for so the little ones cant escape through the bars, heat pad which they sit on, heat pad is under the plastic liner. Its summer here and the chicks are inside our house. I have Australorps and they feathered out pretty quickly so i only need the heat pad for 3...
love your post, what a great idea, but i didn't think roosters would get along, very interesting :goodpost:
I do have a question... i currently have 5 cockerels, all hatched together with 3 pullets, they all seem to get along at the moment but are only 13 weeks old. Do you think they might be...
all from the same breeder, breeder told me they keep the whites in a separate pen to the others. no interest in showing birds in the future.
yes i hatched the whites first then decided to hatch a few more and purchased a mixed colour of b/b/s it was pot luck as to the colours that would hatch.
i'll post some better pics tomorrow of the splash
so your saying my white Australorps are splash ? but the 2 splash i have are like an off white colour which looks like blue leakage through out. hmmmm now i'm confused
i'm only breeding/hatching for my own use, not for sale or...
 @Egghead_Jr
Purchased eggs from a breeder, pure Australorp
Looks white to me, 5 weeks old
8 weeks old, was their first night in the big coop outside, nest boxes on the right have been boarded up as i don't have any layers right now.
they are 13 weeks old now
Thank you so much @BlueBaby :love and @The Moonshiner :love
Great information and food for thought. Will probably end up keeping the splash cockerel for next summer breeding.
I will make the decision once i integrate the 4 little ones out with the whites in the big coop.
Thank you @BlueBaby, yes im leaning towards keeping the splash
Thank you @The Moonshiner, in the past i have only had cross Australorps and didn't know the parents so there was a colour bleed. I had a white australorp cross hen that ended up having black flecks through it which was kinda cool...
Thanks @Trimurtisan was hard and i nearly gave up but i had chicks in the brooder so they kept me going:)
my main concern is i don't want to change/dilute the blue
so maybe it might be better to keep the splash as you mentioned
my main goal is to increase the blue and black but i would really...
Thank you @Trimurtisan so by keeping a white roo will give me a recessive white gene down the line? causing the blues to lighten in colour? i'm not really good with this gene stuff
Thank you for the info @igorsMistress i have been keeping chickens for 5 years now but there's always more to learn.
Yes i did have a rooster before but we are in the process of rebuilding due to a gum tree dropping a limb on our chicken run and losing the last few chickens i had.
So currently...
same as Duckfarmer1 said: so much easier to remove chick poo with the shorter strands and the chicks still love to play and scratch in it. So funny to watch them grab a strand and cherp at the others, then its on with the its mine, no its mine :lau
I currently have pure breed Australorps, regular size. I'm trying to decide which cockerel to keep as i cant keep them all cause that's just asking for trouble and i don't want to have separate pens.
I currently have 5 white and 2 splash cockerels
and 3 white, 1 black and 1 blue pullet.
I would...
i use hay for the floor and the nest boxes, i dont chop the hay as the girls like to pull stands out and cover themselves with it while sitting there waiting to lay.
I do chop the hay for the brooder cage with dress making scissors as they are big and strong and cuts through the hay easy. our...
@HollyWoozle Great Post :goodpost:Given me some ideas.
We have wooden nest boxes and the bottoms need to be replaced, will now line the new bottoms with vinyl.
We use hay in the nests and i always use to catch the girls sitting in the nests trying to cover themselves in the hay.
all 4 hatched healthy, all in the brooder now, looks like 2 splash, 1 blue & 1 black
