I am curious how your hen is now? Has her nail grown back?
I have one who has done exactly the same thing on her middle toe. She is hobbling so it must be painful. So far we have tried antiseptic ointment and vet wrap as her foot feels warm to touch compared to the other so I was worried about...
I can’t choose!!
I have a bantam Polish frizzle hen called Flossy who is the sweetest friendliest little thing (phots attached). She is always waiting by the back door to come inside. She loves to be petted, and is generally so inquisitive, and so happy to follow you around the garden… it...
Hi Erin. It seems like our cockerel’s skin does go back to normal at times, but then at other times it is red again. I’ve noticed it being red a few times now, and he is nearly 2 years old. I can only put it down to being hormonal as suggested. I do sometimes put a thin layer of sudocrem or...
I have an update.... cracked egg hatched perfectly fine! I was a little worried as the broody was only sat on 2 eggs and the other one hatched first, leaving me on the edge of my seat for half a day!
I didn’t do anything with the crack because I was worried about Queenie (the broody) eating or...
Thanks so much I will try that but need to get some plain wax candles. I managed to get a photo and check the egg while the broody was off the nest earlier and it is still alive as of earlier today. This is what the crack looks like...
I have a first time broody Polish bantam hen who we have let sit on 2 eggs. She’s a funny thing (I think most polish are), so she chose the most inappropriate neat box in an appropriate place. We moved her box into the shed and she is happy in the new place but still in plastic nest box.
I...
Thank you, and I know you are right on contacting the vets. The problem is that it is a bank holiday here today so most of them are only open for emergencies, and also not familiar with chickens.
I have tried the veterinary diagnostics but the phone lines don’t go through, so I’ll get back on...
The symptoms are similar but not the same:
Both had a change in voice, and head shaking (and scratching with their toes). They both seem to be struggling with breathing.
The bantam that died was gaping with an unpleasant crowing sound which became more frequent as things progressed over the 2...
Thanks for your help. I did look at this, but with the first bantam dying a couple of days ago with “gaping”, I am worried that the Silkie will eventually go the same way, and it happened so quickly that the one who died just could breathe.
Although, their symptoms seems to be different at the...
Here’s a couple of photos of her ‘bad’ eye, which isn’t currently bubbly, but is a bit watery and has some crusty discharge. She keeps scratching her face too, and the occasional sneeze.
I have found some old antibiotics we had, and I am wondering on dose for a chicken?
I posted a couple of days ago about my booted bantam here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/gapeworm-or-respiratory-please-help.1455753/
Unfortunately, she didn’t make it. Her symptoms of “crowing, gaping” got worse as if her air way was closing up and she passed during the night...
Thanks for your reply.
Those “worms” are already down the toilet but I’m keeping a close eye on her, so if there’s any more, I’ll try and identify. I did move them around in the tissue and they stayed kind of ‘worm like’ but I couldn’t see a Y shape as there apparently is with gape worm.
The...
I have a sick booted bantam hen. She is 2 years old. she free ranges in the garden with the other 6 chickens we have.
Yesterday I noticed that she sounded funny, as if she had something stuck in her throat. Her “voice” was more high pitched than normal. She also sounded like she was trying to...
Thank you both, so now I just need to find some permethrin.
How much would you use on chickens? Is it a spray under each wing type thing? Does it need to get on the skin?
I don’t suppose you have any idea what tetramethrin (0.023%w/w) is? Or benzalkonium chloride? And if they are safe on...
Oh brilliant thank you! So does that mean you can purchase permethrin neat? I will have to have a look, although I have already been search online for other products and struggling to find anything. I assume because most are not regulated for poultry use so maybe generic for other farmyard animals?
