Thank you so much. Last year we introduced 3 new hens (one of which is my single hen) to 3 5 year old hens and eventually it went well, so thankfully it’s not my first introduction. It is however with so many moving factors, ages and things to consider so this was a huge help!
Thank you! We have a 20x10 enclosed run. The 3 young hens (and cockerel) are in the coop and have a 4’x3’ run at the entrance of the coop. Our hen has free rein of all the area within the 20x10 run (except the coop and the small run. She does have hen boxes within the run too.) At night she...
Our sweet hen, Dorothy, as we’ve suspected has turned out to be Stanley. We’re going to swap him with the farm we got him from. I’m currently introducing two 11 week olds and one 12 week old to our 1 year old hen. Our 1 year old hen is the only left after a mink attack. She has been in a run...
That’s exactly what’s been throwing me is it’s possible saddle feathers. This is the only Ameraucana we have so I’m not sure they’d be good comparison. They’re also a week younger. Oh, I meant to add it has not crowed nor sounded like it was even attempting to.
I have a hen that also has some pointy tail feathers just like this one. All the other feathers are rounded. Some look pointed because of its coloring on its body. Or do you think the tail is ~too~ pointy?
This was my first time buying from a local farm and I honestly trust her more than TS, but also haven’t been worried about one being a rooster until now. I’m 98% sure she’s a hen because her feathers are rounded, but she can be a real a-hole (but is also the oldest). So here I am. Hen or rooster?
Thank you. These were hatched by the local farm and i drove them straight home. I had them for a week before I started to have any issues. They have plenty of room to be under the light or out of it for temperature control and I had electrolytes for them, especially when I noticed something was...
I know there’s a million reasons why chicks could die, but I’m hoping to see if this was a ‘just because’ or maybe something I should watch for. We got 4 pullets from a local farm a week ago, they were between 1-2 weeks. This is my 3rd time with chicks and I’ve never lost one before. Our brooder...
We have the pens for them because of the many predators we have here. They wouldn’t stand a chance without it. I let them free range when I can be out with them, but we can’t have roosters where we live. Our ducks always alert the girls and one of them fought off a raccoon at our old house. I...
I had no idea and I thought I had gotten rid of it when it couldn’t get in the coop at night and seemed to move on months ago. Hopefully we’ll catch it soon. Glad yours haven’t come back.
Oh gosh, sorry it is hardwire cloth, however the dog fence it can easily just go through the fencing. It also was going under the ground. At night they’re protected inside their coop, but it came during the day which I never would have expected.
Thank you for your suggestions. She was running mad when we ran out and saw what had happened so that’s very likely.
We do have runs around the coop that is also covered on the top. It’s 3 10x10 dog runs with slanted roof lined by chicken wire which is why we just couldn’t believe this...
We had a weasel attack today in broad daylight. It killed our ducks and all of our chickens but one. She wasn’t touched and is inside in a crate, but she’s definitely in shock. We’re in the process of catching the weasel to remove it before we will dare out her back out. I’m worried about how to...
She’s a 5 year old buff and I have 3 of my OG and 3 new hens. She bruised her other foot two weeks ago fighting with a new chicken and that fully healed but now has this injury (I soaked it and sprayed with ointment and it already looks a WORLDS better - thank you!) but the bruise is still very...
Sorry to ask another question, and I feel like it’s a “no duh” type of thing but want to be sure, she is rather wobbly at times - I assume this is from the bruising on her feet, but wanted to double check if there was something else I should look out for.
My buff had a bruised toe (different than pictured) two weeks ago that has fully healed, but I noticed she was ginger on her other foot and saw this circle between her toes. Is this bumble foot? That toe is also a little bruised on the outside.
Thanks!
