    Picky eaters or feed problem?

I wanted to tell you that we picked up some non-GMO, organic feed today from the organic feed supply. It's going to be easy to get it. Possible it can be delivered to the nearest town - 6 miles away. And the lady is so knowledgeable about chickens and chicken feed and happy to share whatever she...

    Picky eaters or feed problem?

Okay. Thanks so much for the input and opinions. I hope the quail will eat it since I hate it all to go to waste. This sounds incredibly stupid, but I didn't even think about the feed getting too old. We're in a kind of remote area with limited local options for feed other than the typical...

    Picky eaters or feed problem?

Maybe that's part of the problem. I originally got that feeder to try and keep them from kicking bedding into the food. I was getting frustrated when I had to keep cleaning bedding out of the food. I expect there are better alternatives to keeping the food dish cleaner. It sounded like a good...

    Picky eaters or feed problem?

Thanks, Kerbotx! I'm not familiar with wet mash. But I'm certainly willing to give that a try. Could you tell me how to go about making that? I was already considering changing to some other feeder anyhow.

    Picky eaters or feed problem?

Thanks, Mary. Here's a picture of the feeder. It's a RentACoop feeder. I checked to see that they can easily eat out of it. The feed is Scratch & Peck Organic Poultry Layer. It's probably 6 or 7 months old. We used to let them out of the chicken yard in the late afternoon to hunt grasshoppers. I...

    Picky eaters or feed problem?

I never thought that chickens could be picky eaters. I've been blaming my feeder [it's one of those metal boxes with two holes near the bottom for them to put their heads in - I checked and they can get their heads in just fine] but maybe they just got spoiled when I fed them sunflower seeds...

    My extremely picky pullets

I never thought that chickens could be picky eaters. I've been blaming my feeder but maybe they just got spoiled when I fed them sunflower seeds and then watermelon and frozen corn during our triple digit weather. They just are not eating much--of the feed, the grit or the oyster shell. If I...

    Feeder question

Thanks for your response. That makes sense. And I'll use what common sense I have left in using it. :jumpy

    Feeder question

So, I ordered this feeder. I noticed in the description that it is for poultry 12 weeks or older only. Why would that be? I feel a little stupid, but I don't understand why they couldn't use it as soon as they're tall enough to get their little heads in there?

Comment by 'nolotus' in article 'Using Deep Bedding in a Small Coop'

A great article! Thank you for putting it all together in such an understandable way. I'll be referring back to this often as we begin our deep bedding journey in our new coop. :thumbsup

Which Breeds Would Be Good for a Newbie?

Thanks for your reply. Actually I'd never buy a rooster but because I'm incubating eggs that a neighbor gave me - at least this once - I'm suspecting that I'll get at least one rooster whether I want it or not. These are Astralorpes in the incubator. I do plan on ordering a few pullet chicks...

    New babies 😍

I'm not familiar with Foxfire. Could you enlighten me? I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit I'm incubating eggs this time of year in high desert Idaho. 🤫 Not really my decision but still....But I keep reminding myself that these chickens are a lot hardier than I give them credit for. By...
