Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Well, this spring started off rough with losing three hens for different reasons but still a bummer losing any ever. I still have the other chickens, still love them, still love providing local wholesome eggs to friends and family. Have been busy unfortunately with medical issues (cancer in my...

    Sweet Sweet White Leghorn Limping

How is Sky? Did you just try to keep her inside and decrease her mobility? Did you give aspirin water? I just found your post because I was searching about limping leghorns. Our sweet hen, Foggy, has a limp we noticed yesterday evening. She seemed better earlier today but then worse just...

    Sexing Easter Eggers

Thanks for the input and sympathy. I appreciate it. whomp whomp 😒. I can pick 'em lol! 😅 the flashier one is sadly gonna be our first stew bird ever. He's not friendly, never has been since we brought it home and has bent toes not crooked but actually bent! 90 degrees almost! Doesn't slow him...

    Sexing Easter Eggers

Sorry, I should've been more clear. It's only the ones with red combs who are in question. The other two are definitely hens and only in the photos for comparison of the combs. There are two with red combs and two with pale combs. Today they are 10 weeks or really close it and I could see the...

    Sexing Easter Eggers

I'm thinking pullet for both right now but can you update with more pictures in a few weeks? Do you notice any different behavior from either or both?

    Sexing Easter Eggers

Thanks that gives a little hope lol it's like a crazy game show pullet or not pullet! 🤣 but yeah I'm leaning cockerel too though. I've come up with boy names now too haha.

    Sexing Easter Eggers

Thanks! I was trying to post other photos too but apparently only those two loaded. I will add more. These first two photos are of just one I think is a boy next to one I know is a hen. The first photo is more to show it's whole body but the lighting is bad.

    Sexing Easter Eggers

Hey y'all! I would like your thoughts on my 9 week old EEs. I think I have two cockerels out of my 4 EE chicks from my local hardware store that were all supposed to be pullets.

Easter Egger // Help Me Sex My Chicken!

How old is it? I'm thinking you have a pullet compared with my suspicious birds haha. It's very pretty.

Easter Egger // Help Me Sex My Chicken!

I'm in the same boat! I got 4 EE and I think 2 are cockerels. They are Hoover Hatchery's "Americana" EEs. Supposed to be pullets 🙄 but I realize there is an error rate in sexing chicks. They were born feb 8thish (the store got them in on the 10th). So about 9 weeks old. Here's photos of the one...

It's time for me to admit I have a problem...

Ditto to what @SaltyHen said! @pipdzipdnreadytogo what a cutie you have! No shame in that! I have the same problem with my kitty baby! 🤣🐈❤️

    Black Copper Marans cockerel

Well my two cents that he's a handsome bird and will only get more so as he matures. Congrats ☺️

    Black Copper Marans cockerel

not all Marans have feathered legs the British standard is featherless on legs. The American standard must have feathers to be shown as I understand it. So in the USA the feathered leg variety is referrred to as French Marans and those without are referred to as English. Hope that helps. That...

    Feather pulling

Too funny cuz our two do that same thing about trying to be on top right under our two matriarchs head hen and head hen’s bff. And I’ve physically moved one of them because no matter how much they “told” her to move the EE was NOT going to move abs in face head hen was screeching because she was...

    Feather pulling

It’s funny that they are same breed and also low in pecking order. There is another thread with photos of this very behavior from again an EE that is lowest in pecking order. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/snuggling-at-roost-time-causing-aggressive-pecking.1492969/ it’s comforting to...

"Snuggling" at Roost Time - Causing Aggressive Pecking

Ugh for sure. Like exact same thing with our Chloe and Chippie but it’s worse with Chloe. Maple is a great name. Poor sweet things oh well. Chickens are savage, I guess. It’s just their normal I suppose. Thanks for sharing including your photos. I don’t have a camera in our coop…yet. But I’ve...

    Feather pulling

Yes exactly that birds don’t have receptors for capsaicin. That’s why I feel like the spray is probably waste of my money unless it tastes bad to them but generally the idea of putting capsaicin in a deterrent is due to the heat part which as we said chickens can’t sense. I wasn’t worried about...

    Feather pulling

Thanks, I actually decided against it because the spray has red pepper in it and I felt I couldn’t trust it since birds can’t taste it. The heat from the capsaicin does work on mammals like dogs or squirrels or foxes for example. And I could just y find the spray available to me for over $20...
