Sneaky hen snuck off to go broody. 12 days along. Break or raise?

I moved a hen at about that point a couple of years ago. She is my perpetual broody, and she had found a corner of the coop that I missed repeatedly (under the nest boxes.) I scooped up the eggs and put them in a nest box, and when she went nuts, I put her in there. The moment she saw the...

Review by 'sharol' in article 'Caring For Chickens in the Winter'

Great information. Last winter when it got down to 18 below 2 nights in a row, my flock was in an unheated (insulated, ventilate through the eaves and roof peak) coop. We did put heavy clear plastic over the windows because they were leaking air. I didn't lose a bird. I did take them pellet...

Hi. I'm baaaacccckkk. Sorry it has been so long. I have a question for all you Breda people. Last spring my perennial broody hatched 2 chicks from "unfertilized" (I thought) eggs that I had given her to give her something to do. One egg was dark brown (Welsumer) and the other was white...

Comment by 'sharol' in article 'Chicken bully/chicken victim - a two-sided issue'

My 7 year old Welsumer hen was nearly scalped a couple of years ago after the head hen died (egg binding) and she lost status with the flock. We removed her from the coop and put her in a portable unit I use for new hatchlings and their moms. I figured she would die, but she healed and after a...

I'm so DONE with cold. We had Christmas. We had a hard freeze, now let's get on with spring. Oh, I forgot. This is Kansas in February. Sigh. The older I get, the less tolerant I am of extremes.

Hey, I'm back. Of course I am. I have a problem. I have a gorgeous Jubilee Orpington rooster who has a series of problems. First he developed an eye infection. I treated it with eye ointment, and it healed fine, but then the use of the antibiotic caused him to develop a yeast infection on...

That's a good word for it. My Araucanas lay lots of eggs when they lay, but are broody a fair amount of the time during warmer weather. It is worth it for the beautiful blue eggs, though.

Danz, you are absolutely the chicken whisperer. (imagine bowing from the waist -- I'm not worthy, I'm not worthy). LOL

I hear you on the possums. I had mixed feelings on the subject, but my DH was adamant that we relocate her (to an approved location with permission about 9miles away.) Thanks for the info on the Safeguard. I found such mixed info on it that I didn't know what to believe. YOU I believe. Glad...

Thanks. I have safeguard, but I couldn't find any instructions on it. It sounds like the right way to go. Do you have any idea of the withdrawl period for eggs?

We rehomed one this morning, too. A young female we think. Took her to an area that is more friendly to 'possums. They do, after all, eat ticks.

Have to worm the chickens. If I use Safeguard, what is the process? I have done this before but it was two years ago. I also have Wazine and Ivermectin? I want a fairly all purpose. One of my cats horked up a roundworm, so it is time to worm the zoo.

Hi, guys, I haven't been around for a while, but I'm still doing the birds. Last spring when my broody's chicks didn't hatch, I got some hatchery chicks from Bluestem. Two of them were silver laced wyandottes. They are now almost 15 weeks old. I think they are pullets, but I haven't had...

Don't misunderstand. She only lays for about 3 weeks or a month before taking another 6 month vacation. When she lays, she lays, but when she doesn't, well she doesn't.

MY oldest hen is a Welsumer, and she is still laying intermittently. I've gotten 12 huge dark brown eggs from her in the last month. She is 7 and still pretty spry. She is my lap hen.

You are from the Winfield area, right? Do you ever get to Wichita? I might be able to coordinate a trip to Wichita to visit a friend at some point. There isn't any hurry on the Welsumers. Their mom babies her chicks for months. I just hate to butcher them. I loathe butchering, but that is...

My broodies are happily raising chicks. There are 9 that are about 4 weeks old that I got for the hens when their own eggs weren't fertile. 4 of them are Welsumers and 3 of the 4 are male, so if anyone needs a "Kellogs Corn Flakes" rooster, I'd be glad to share one of them (or more). The...

Comment by 'sharol' in article 'Cleaning and storing fresh eggs'

I've had one for 6 years or so. I ordered it from England before they were available in the US. Be sure to put the small end on the egg to the inside, and it will work better. Also, if the eggs are all similar in size they will roll better. As long as I remove them one at a time it works...

White scab or spot on comb - what is it?

That is what I thought. I should have dealt with this a couple of weeks ago, but I let it slide and his comb and wattles are white and crusty (better after a couple days of miconazole, though). He seems to appreciate the stuff and settles when I apply it. He is a Jubilee English Orp, and a...
