    Finishing heritage meat chickens

I'm a stay at home mom looking for a long term project. As far as smaller breast, our family prefers dark meat. I know I will never get anywhere near a cornish x, I am not looking for a huge bird, also how fast they grow isn't a big concern either. I guess I'm just looking for well flavored...

    Finishing heritage meat chickens

I am doing an experiment with a few heritage chicks I bought. They are from a hatchery, so i know that they will be on the small end. I am planning on caponizing them at some point this week. I have a time until I need to worry about finishing them. I was wondering what some of you do to finish...

Self sufficient? What were the challenges?

I do not consider myself to be very self sufficient, but currently I raise rabbits for meat, they are a mixed breeds. I usually end up with at least 120 lbs of meat a year from 2 does and a buck. I just got a new satin mix female that is 12lbs looking forward to breeding her soon. Hardest thing...

    What Is Your Hobby?

I do some sewing a little quilting. I also am learning to crochet and tan hides. I found a hide tumbler at an auction I am keeping an eye on. Also breeding and raising meat rabbits. Also cooking and baking it been a learning curve since my son has been diagnosed with gluten sensitivity, waiting...

What chicken breed(s) is/are YOUR favorite? Why?

Delawares are my favorite in my flock. Very friendly and curious, mine all enjoy being petted and fed by hand. Welsummers are my second favorite, good attitude, get along with everyone. Very pretty speckled eggs too. A little more shy then my delawares.

    Chicks by mail mortality rate

I had bad luck with the post office this year, ordered 20 delaware chicks, 5 dead on arrival, lost another 8 within 3 days of pickup, tried nutri drench, but had not much luck. They had 4 days of traveling. I believe they got chilled and just couldn't recover. It was below freezing when I went...

    Chickens are gone!

That's true, some people are mean for fun, and some do things out of desperation. Alot of fake homeless too, (college kids taking handouts to pay for liquor) . I agree with getting a camera and locks. Get a no trespassing sign too, like others have said.

    Chickens are gone!

Do you have any homeless people in your area? A neighbor of ours had similar experience and put up a game camera and caught the guy. It turns out guy was homeless and desperate for a meal.

Official BYC Poll: How Important Is It That You Get Eggs From Your Chickens?

Somewhat important, we are a family of 5. We don't use artificial lighting, we have a few hybrids and a few heritage. Usually when I make scrabble eggs it take a dozen eggs.

Just ate our first heritage breed

We sent our 2 welsummer roosters in with our cornish x to get processed. They were a year old, processed weight was 4 and 4.5lbs. I roasted them low and slow according to an antique cookbook recipe. They were definitely a different texture compared to cornish x, but no where near as tough as...

Review by 'Niki1313' on item 'Welsummer'

I have 5 welsummers 3 hens and 2 roosters, mine lay medium/large eggs every other day through the summer, the roosters are great protection for my flock, but crow alot and are loud. Hens are also very chatty. They get along well with my other breeds and young children.

    Chickens calling wild turkey

I have a mixed flock of chickens that I free range. This morning all of them were standing on the edge of the woods on our property making lots of low clucking sounds. Then they would get quiet for a few minutes and then start clucking again. This went on for almost an hour while I was doing...

Found a rabbit under my porch this morning!

I keep my rabbits outside in their own section of our chicken coop. We started with one in the house, but they kick litter and hay everywhere. He looks like a mix to me, maybe part mini rex. Rabbits are territorial and will fight with each other. I have heard of people's rabbits getting along...

should i let my chickens die naturally?

Depends on the bird for me, I have one welsummer hen that has adopted my new chicks this year, she has taken very good care of them so far. So she will probably die naturally. I got a few cinnamon queens for eggs, those ones will be sent to butcher between ages of 2 -3 years. Roosters I have if...
