The Old Red Barn
This barn has been peacefully sitting on our property for years with no use but storage until I got ready for chickens. It has two separate coops inside: one for my free range and laying flock, the other for the Phoenixes. Each coop has a separate door that goes...
Well, hello!
My name is Angela and I'm from the land of 10,000 lakes (yup, Minnesota!). I got my first flock of chickens when I was in seventh grade for my SAE program in FFA. I just loved them and my obsession grew! I have a flock of very spoiled BR's, BO's, Red Sex Links, Cochins...
I picked up two frizzle cochin bantams at a sale once. Those sad eyes got me again but they were also debeaked. Not too terribly short on the top so its not as deformed looking as others. The bottom beak was extremely grown out on them though. It was a flat shovel on the bottom. They couldn't...
I received hatching eggs from a friend that were supposed to be phoenixes. I believe they are, but I also know they are pretty poor quality. I think they are supposed to be the black breasted red variety, although the coloring is off. I just love them! They are so friendly and docile. Just for...
I've put vaseline on my birds many times, dipped legs in cooking oil, COMPLETELY cleaned the coop, and finally treated with drop on ivermectin. I have about thirty birds so this has been a lot of fun lol but they're all very friendly and taking it well. I've done a lot but I just want to make...

yep, your roo is a regular hatchery barred rock, not a sexlink and the hen is a red sexlink with Dom white coloring her tail and a few other areas so that is the pair that produced your white chick.
Thanks! Just one more mystery solved
Thanks everyone! I am positive that the mom is a red sex link now, the color of the egg she hatched out of is the same as the ones I've collected from my red girl.
Chris 09, this is the rooster. He should be a barred rock
Here's what I believe is the mom:
Sorry the pics aren't that great
In June I hatched out some chicks from my flock. The rooster was a barred rock, the hens were either BR's, Australorps, or Red Sex Links. Out of the darkest brown egg came a pure white chick! I posted pics of her earlier in another forum. I was out in the coop when I noticed something out of the...
i'm not sure how she did it there's even a hydrant right beside the chicken coop so it's very easy access to get to. The chickens were very happy to see they had water again and were at the waterer for some time lol. I think they're gonna be just fine but wanted to make sure. Thanks!
I was gone on a week long vacation with the family, and we had a friend feeding and watering our animals. I came home and noticed my coffee can of cooking oil had disappeared. (it had been used to coat their legs when I was dealing with leg mites) I went to go wash out the waterers in both of my...
the scaley leg mites just seem to be getting worse. Everyone has it, and the scales continue to raise. I really hope the campho stuff works!!
juliawitt, Sam is adorable!!

it might be a long time before I can get any pictures as we are leaving early tomorrow for vacation, but it looks just like the other pics of scaly legs to me. I have only treated once with Ivermectin, how often should I be? My family is not enjoying being unable to eat the eggs during...

i think I will give it a try MsNibbles! Is there any specific spot to drop it on the legs? all over? a lot or just a few drops? Sorry I have so many questions! I just want these things gone!
Thanks everyone!! I really appreciate it!
thanks chicmom. I've actually added liquid sevins dust to the cooking oil i've been dunking their legs in. Do you suppose that is helping? Maybe i'll just have to do it more often.
I have both feather legged and clean legged and they're all affected. But the feather legged ones are the hardest to try to get rid of it with! The vaseling and oils are making a complete mess out of their feathers
It looks just like my australorps. How old is it? I want to say it's a female because I have hens with even larger combs than that. But age could play into that, too. Pretty flock you've got!
Well....it's not an araucana lol, you're right! They would have ear tufts and look quite different from that. I think your's is a wyandotte (but i've been wrong before ).
I'm not sure on the gender, but he/she is very pretty!!
