    Breeds and Disease Resistance

I just want to revive this thread since it's over 10 years old. It's easily one of the most informative and lively discussions I've come across on the topic but im suer there have been developments. Does anyone else have anything to add? I have been looking at adding more breeds to my breed...

    The Twisted Breed Project

    SOUND identification (Coyotes?)

So I was jarred out of sleep about 30 mins ago (3:50am). Even before my dogs were which is rare (coonhound and German shepherd). My birds and barn cats are securely locked up and the sound was coming from about 3 houses away, close to the power line. It was loud so I am guessing there was a...

    Flystrike WITH IMPACTED CROP

Thank you for your response. I know that but I weighed in favor of preventing infection from the flystrike. Unfortunately as I said, vet care simply isn't an option. If it was I definitely would have done it. As it stands, by the time I can get into a vet, she will either already have...

    Flystrike WITH IMPACTED CROP

I posted this to the chickens vet corner group on Facebook but have failed to get insight in what could be a timely fashion (14h). At the end I have updated with her condition this morning. Flystrike ANY help appreciated. I have been having the worst luck with my birds lately. This hen was in...

Creating the Corvalla! A chicken that looks like a crow

you're right I didn't notice the comb. The feathers look a little too thick for a Sumatra.

Uncoordinated (Lame?) chicken - Mareks? Vitamin deficiency? Malnutrition? Please advise!

I’ve been battling vitamin b2 (riboflavin) deficiency but with the respiratory symptoms have you considered mycoplasma? It can present with lameness/paralysis. Vitamin deficiency would be unlikely to cause respiratory issues.

    Source of Vitamin B deficiency?

Update on the affected birds… they are showing either signs of improvement (on the least affected) or arrested decline (on the worst) with treatment for vitamin b deficiency

    Source of Vitamin B deficiency?

Im inclined to disagree. While I understand that the mareks vaccine doesn't prevent the disease, the symptoms just don't line up. And I mentioned it because I would expect the vaccinated bird to not fall ill a full week before the unvaccinated ones. I have birds from the same hatch/breeder and...

    Source of Vitamin B deficiency?

I have a friend that recently bought some younger d’uccle chickens off of me. Cockerel (h: may 16,2022) Hens (h: Aug 2, 2021) Pullets (h: July 4, 2022) sired by a rooster from the same breeder as the cockerel and the moms were the two hens she took ETA - she got them from me on sept 4...

Most/Least commonly exhibited chickens at shows and other APA Questions

Nankins are super uncommon. Even show breeders are focusing on building genetic diversity first, and apa standards second.

    Mystery chicks!

Should have been more clear, not worried about genders. Curious about breeds. For example I want to say chick 4 is blue laced red wyandotte but not sure

    Mystery chicks!

Some of these chicks came from my own pens (link to thread with parents) but there are some mystery chicks in here from a friend. She has no idea if purebred or mix. Most chicks are black with fibro (100% mine for sure) But here are some with color. My eggs parents are any combo of fibro...

    d'Uccle Cult

They could be blue Mille fleurs. I believe those genes require golden neck to make them. I was just recently talking to @Amer about this. I personally don’t have blue Mille fleur myself. Mine are blue silver. Left is a light blue silver (with extreme leakage), middle is a blue silver and right...

    Mille Fleur d’Uccle color varieties

Yes, blue silver Mille fleur (which has blue dots rather than black). When you say heterozygous golden Mille fleur I take that as the traditional Mille fleur phenotype and the blue golden as regular Mille fleur with the black coloring dilute to blue? And then to possibly get blue Mille fleur...

    Mille Fleur d’Uccle color varieties

Now that the chicks are more grown up and have been sexed, I know I have a blue silver cockerel (actually two but I gave one to a friend). What color would happen if breeding blue silver to Mille fleur?

    Mille Fleur d’Uccle color varieties

Ok gotcha. So basically by the 3rd or 4th gen it will be bred out (considering I am selecting well).

    Mille Fleur d’Uccle color varieties

So it will depend on the mothers sire then?

    Mille Fleur d’Uccle color varieties

Is there a way to select for that with the female? Obviously it wouldn’t show because the yellow appears on hackles (at least with mine) but certain females may be carriers despite having no leakage. This is my roo and I assume this is the yellow you refer to.
