The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

Thank you SO MUCH! That made it easier for me to understand. I was close but didn't have the science behind it entirely. I love genetics but can get sucked into a deep rabbit hole and I DEEPLY appreciate you writing it out for me!

How to go about building a pre-order?

Hello! I am starting a hopeful hatchery of quality birds (as quality as I can afford and get). I am working towards having SOP birds (I have the newest addition) and others, like olive eggers and sexlinks (from the good stock). I am thinking of building pre-orders for the upcoming hatching...

The "Ask Anything" to Nicalandia Thread

This is an old thread but I was wondering if it is still active? I am trying to understand all the genetics behind sexlinks. I know that a solid cock over barred hens will create sexlinks - That is - black copper marans over cukoo marans. I am working on a barred true blue and was wondering...

Chicken wound on wing- won't stop bleeding!

So this rooster has an abcess looking thing on its wing on the up side by the carpal/phalange. I've cleaned and bandaged and it bled through in 3 hours. Cleaned again and opened the abcess thinking possible broken "blood" feather. Nothing inside. Cleaned and attempted to cauterize the inside of...

    Sapphire Jewel Photos

I have 16 that are 7/8 weeks old and another 10 that are a week old. I want to play either them and breeding. I certainly hope they lay well. I want to breed for homozygous blue throughout the flock, pea combs and a splash or light gray feather pattern consistently. It'll probably take me 3...

What's the temperature where you are???

That is stupid cold. Coldest I have ever been in was -35 with wind chill to -60. No thank you! How long does it typically stay that cold? We are usually only this cold for a few days to a week.

What's the temperature where you are???

Well -19 this morning and wind chill to -37... totally okay if this is our last deep cold spell.. Here in Montana we are colder than most of Antarctica today. It warms back up after today though to low 30's high 20's.

Blue Cuckoo Marans Rooster over Black Copper hens

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

Oh I think there is a smattering of different coops there. I have seen some seriously interesting coops out here. 😆 That being said, a good idea to ask. I forget about the state threads. Thank you!

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

Even with the last two days in our current coop it snowed inside it due to the ventilation in the roof and the eaves.. strange for sure!

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

Those are all things to consider. We always have wind here.. never less than 5-8 mph.. most days we're running 10-12mph. The highest I have seen here was 70mph. It is common in winter to get 50-60mph winds and negative temps. Yesterday and Tuesday we were ranging from 5 degrees to -15 degrees...

Blue Cuckoo Marans Rooster over Black Copper hens

Would this combination create sexlink offspring or does it need to be Cuckoo Hens and BCM roosters? Thank you!

Meyer Rare Assortment - ID help please? These are 5 weeks old

Can I ask how you can tell? I was hoping it would be but do the colors change? I haven't had one before. I have two golden laced wyandottes

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

I definitely just read some about them. I am not sure they will work for sure where we are at due to our shear volume of wind and weather. We are currently -13 degrees and yesterday we were -8 with 35mph winds (+). I do plan on leaving the plastic removable like our current coop. The plastic is...

Meyer Rare Assortment - ID help please? These are 5 weeks old

They are 5 weeks old. I ordered 5 pullets and 5 cockerels. I knew what 5 of them are.. 2 were killed in a freak accident 😭 My kids accidentally spilled the water and while cleaning it they got put in a smaller bin.. well two jumped up and broke their necks on the lid of the rubbermaid. Lessons...

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

They will be insulated with standard insulation and plywood. I have an 8x8 metal one that worked this summer but we have the plastic windows that we can take off that has chicken wire as well so it opens up the ventilation. We don't typically get that hot, 90-95 in August. . South Central Montana.

Ana White DIY Green House as a coop!

We are building these as chicken coops but instead of the corrugated plastic it will all be metal. There will be windows up front that are plastic and removable for summer but I am excited to see how this goes! I will have the 1st one done by end of next week. Anyone else use this type of coop...

What's the temperature where you are???

-13 here but feels like -27 with wind chill.. It got cold here in Montana this week! We ended up with about 7" of snow but the drifting and winds blew it all in weird spots. Some drifts are feet deep.
