    Invited someone today

I met a nice lady today to get some Spearmint plants, she also has backyard chickens. Hopefully she finds her way here and enjoy this great site.

What size flock do you have?

I started out raising 6 chicks that we had for 3 years on a 2 acre city property. Then we moved and coons got to them somehow. I ended up building a large coop and run, raised 16 new chicks and have done well for 3 years so far but was getting too many eggs as people just werent buying them as...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Kiki, all areas have them, I helped a friend who moved from Florida get assistance with her run down place she bought. Just search Economic Development for your county, city, area and should pull it up. Sometimes your local building division will have their number as well , if you have issues...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Well, I downsized my flock from 15 to 9 ( I really want to only have 6 ) just easier to keep up with for a few reasons. feed lasts longer, less cleaning in the coop and in reality less eggs to deal with as it seemed this past year everyone around here started selling "farm eggs" and less were...

    Nest box idea

this is inside mine, door in back to access eggs. put a bar in for nesting and dont let them sleep in the boxes... nasty and extra unnecessary work

    Nest box idea

Im not understanding your drawing or question, Ive built a few coops and any doors need hinges/latches/hitch in order to swing and secure.

Comment by 'Sono' in article 'Top 10 Ways To Save On Feed Costs'

we eat a lot of salads, so they get the ends of lots of veggies as well ( Romaine, iceberg, carrots, peppers, cucumbers, artichokes...ect... ) they flock to the gate when I walk that way with a bowl of scraps. I currently downsized my flock from 14 to 9 and hopefully 6 soon, saving on feed and...

Pinning down a rooster - does it work?

Theres always that one who claims its friendly just to get rid of it. When I got rid of my roos I invited the new owners to come hang with them in the coop and see for themselves and pick which they wanted ( I had 5 at the time ) and all were super tame with kids. But Ive known people local...

    Just cleaned out the coop

Yes, they are happy. They get lots of treats as well since we are big salad eaters.... they get lots of fruits and veggies over time. I currently have 14 hens and downsizing to 6... just too many eggs and no one buying them anymore. Just enough for us to eat and store the remaining as we are...

    Look what I got.....

well these new brass ones dont have any way of taking apart, I wont chance damaging one just to look unless one goes bad in the future. From what I see there is no springs, just silicone rubber BUT I could be wrong.

    Look what I got.....

Here are pics , I attached to a wire so I can rotate them together to show how the new nipples stay sealed regardless and the ball/rods only work with gravity and I assume not enough weight to seal the ball/rod properly and can only be used in a plumbed vertical position. New silicone seals will...

    Look what I got.....

Gravity for the water but the nipples will seal at any angle because the silicone seal just flexs when the birds peck it.... Ill post a couple pics in a few here.

    Just cleaned out the coop

Cleaned and ready fo.r spring.... Full feeder and water barrel, Tilled all the old bedding into the soil, got some awesome black gold going for the garden. As I remove the soil for the garden I will add double ground hardwood mulch which will keep their feet dry and start over for next years compost

    Look what I got.....

the seal acts as a spring, so its a positive seal. The ball style uses gravity and the ball/rods just dont seem to keep a good seal after awhile in use. Mine tended to start dripping during the winter and would never seal correctly even after cleaning. I love these with the silicone seals as...
