    Roaming Bear - Upstate NY

Hey all, While new to the area we have a new friend roaming around the neighborhood. We have 20 or so houses up in our local mountain and it's relatively rural and quiet. Yesterday my wife was outside and opened the door and noticed the neighbors out with a spot light so she grabbed it while...

Is pose this normal? If not how do i get him to stop??

This is pretty normal. As long as they are eating/drinking running around while awake normal. they sleep a lot in the first few weeks as they are growing rapidly! Hopefully your side kick sleeper grows out of this :)

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

Yeah generally the SOP you aren't going to see until their first full molt at that 18 months mark for feather coloring. I've been fortunate with my batch of ladies from Meyer's. Even the Blue Copper Marans are beautiful. I'll try to get a picture of my rooster that's better but he is...

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

Wrath is a wealth of knowledge here too. It is not uncommon for the BCM's to have some white feathering under 10 weeks of age. As their primary feathers come in they will shed the white generally. I had two that had white wing and facial feathers for a bit like around 8-9 weeks they shed. This...

    Maran or Cochin

She looks very cute! Yes I would agree she's got some of the characteristics of the BCM (Black Copper Marans). Would love to see when she gets to be 12 weeks+.

    Raised Bed Questions

I just got some chickens a few months ago and plan to start doing composting asap. The beds are in great shape thankfully, and they haven't been used in two seasons so just having to prep cause it's still getting below freezing somedays up here in the mountains. I should be able to start...

What color will the eggs be ?

Honestly not sure how to answer this as there is so many factors I can give you some research to do to guess. But also you won't know until the eggs come out as there is a 25/25/50 chance for Green/Blue/Brown depending on what you breed to with EE to EE. And then you can look at the charts for...

What color will the eggs be ?

It'll be interesting but egg genetics aren't super rocket science it just depends on if you truly know what he was bred with before and what the one you are breeding him to. As if they have recessive/dominant genes you can basically do simple charting and find out what you'll get. But again...

What color will the eggs be ?

Also on another note that rooster you have above looks awfully a lot like most black copper marans. So if he's second generation BCM/Egger the egg colors are going to be all off because marans have way heavier bloom them the average layer.

What color will the eggs be ?

This might help you a little bit on guessing. But unless you know what exactly his lineage is you will never know.

What age can pullets move in to the coop with no heat in NY?

I moved mine out in upstate new york at about 5 weeks old. Just made sure they had ample air flow, and their heat plate has been in a corner of the coop as it's gotten sub 20 a few times. But they have been just fine. If they get too cold they will just ball up in the coop. Mine are around 8...

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

Thank you! They are very ready to get out of the coop but it's been so cold out and I haven't been able to build the run out just yet. Hoping for warmer weather next week to at least let them get some grass and hang outside a bit.

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

We got close to 7 inches of snow last night and it's turned to slush with icy rain today, but chickens are all doing well! The easter eggers are the personalities and the rooster which is a BCM is a big baby lol. This is almost 8 weeks :).

What type of Maran is this?

Probably a BCM of some sort. It looks like many of mine that were from meyer's hatchery. Good steal assuming it's the variant you want :)

    Baby chicks are constipated

It helps not using cold water as well. I've had good luck w/ my last batch from letting the water get to a luke warm and it prevents pasty butt/aids in digestion. Also not adding any vitamins/minerals as well. But @nuthatched's suggestion is another way to make sure they get hydrated and help...

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

I bought two olive eggers in the batch but this the only definite olive egger now that I'm sure. Will need to see how they feather out in a few weeks to see who is true easters but you never know!

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

Happy Friyay! Chicken spam pics approximately 5 1/2 weeks. It's a chilly day in upstate but they are loving the coop and the freedom to roost on bars as needed. They still sit in a ball together at night. Some of my favorites so far are the golden cuckoo marans + black coppers. Best...

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

Will try and post updates this week i missed their four week but will get in their five weeks. Most of their down feathers are gone besides the ameracauna who has a bunch of funny looking pin feathers all about lol. Really impressed so far w/ Meyer's so far with quality of all the breeds I got.

Meyer Hatchery: A Raise A long (Black & Blue Copper Marans, Cuckoo Marans, Easter Egger and Olive Eggers Galore)

I'm excited to see what mine turn out this spring. I should get around to taking some pics this week I've just been swamped w/ work and other house things sadly. That is a very nice shade of dark brown. Also side note I think one of the grey's I have four similar colored (one is deff an EE w/...
