Mystery Illness in my Favorite Chicken

Update: My little Cloudy is back to normal! I realized that she wasn’t eating any food as well, so I made mash using water with their pellet food to get her to eat and after two days of that, she is back to her perky self! I still don’t know what the root of the issue was, but as long as she is...

Mystery Illness in my Favorite Chicken

She is 4 years old and she is one of my best egg layers. She and my other two hens did take a laying break this winter because they decided to molt when we had below zero temperatures. This past month she had started up again with 1 egg every 2-3 days. I opened up the egg and there was no yolk...

Senior Chicken Who Is Thin and Not Acting Like Her Normal Self

Thank you so much for this!!! She is doing much better and while I am still working on putting weight on her, she hasn't had a lethargic day in a while! She is actually right now one of my perkiest hens even amidst the freezing -10-degree weather we had this past week. After losing one of my...

Senior Chicken Who Is Thin and Not Acting Like Her Normal Self

Thank you so much for replying! I’m so sorry I didn’t reply sooner, I’m just crazy with the holidays. My feeding routine is unlimited access to pellet feed. Usually the get about 1 cup of scratch a day unless I have lettuce, grape, or other health scraps for them. I do not use any supplements...

Senior Chicken Who Is Thin and Not Acting Like Her Normal Self

Hello! One of my hens, Comet (a Sapphire Gem hybrid chicken), is 3 1/2 years old and I have noticed some things that are not normal for her. First, to give some context, I was on a 3 week trip this past summer and my chickens went to stay with some of my friends at their home during that trip...

Thank you everyone for you help! While her crop was doing better, she was so weak that she died this morning after I had given her water. Thanks again for all our help!

Very sick chicken who’s lost weight, has a crop the size of a softball, and has thrown-up. Help!

She won’t on her own, but I am giving her 5 mL every hour using a needle less syringe. Should I be giving her more?

Very sick chicken who’s lost weight, has a crop the size of a softball, and has thrown-up. Help!

Yes, there is a bad odor. The crop however has not grown to the size it was yesterday, even though it is past mid day, so that is better, but we will see.

Very sick chicken who’s lost weight, has a crop the size of a softball, and has thrown-up. Help!

Update June 18: She lived through the night and her crop was half the size as it was yesterday, her comb was redder, and she fought me a little when I was feeling her crop. I think she has a sever/advanced case of sour crop, so she is definitely not out of danger yet.

I checked and I couldn't feel any lump, but I will continue to check to make sure! Thank you!!!

Very sick chicken who’s lost weight, has a crop the size of a softball, and has thrown-up. Help!

Thank you very much! I suspect a crop issue as well. This morning the crop was half the size it was yesterday, but still bigger than a normal crop. Her comb was also redder this morning and she fought me more than yesterday when I gave her electrolytes. If she does not improve over the next few...

Very sick chicken who’s lost weight, has a crop the size of a softball, and has thrown-up. Help!

Thank you! Because I’ve been gone, I don’t know who has or hasn’t laid eggs, but of the five chickens, the person who watched them said he only got one egg a day. Normally she is a regular layer and is one of the more consistent layers of my flock of five.
