Hey hey hey from rural Hilham, TN. I've been quite busy with pomeranusn puppies these last few months. I officially had no more chickens since November 2023. My German Shepherds broke into the hen house... but we've started over! I have 7 chicks, 3 buff Orpingtons, 2 Isa Browns, and 2...
Yes, I believe so. When I purchased him, he was in the "Bantam" bin. So no specific breed name. After some research, the porcelain d'ccle was where we landed too.
This is Elvis, and he knows his name very well. He is also helping raise the babies, he even lets them pick his feathers and his feet, without drama. We have lost a few birds this summer, but Elvis stays alert. He won't let me hold him, unless I grab him to give him special care. Once I've got...
Thank you! Yes, I will do that this evening. She's had her wrap on for a few hours now. I also sprinkled electrolytes with probiotics in some fresh watermelon juice. Her one leg look pretty tired too. Overall, I think she will be ok. My poor sweet girl
I thought my head count was right, but it turned out I was off by 1! This morning I found a very scared baby chick, pinned between the wall and bin we have them in temporarily. I wrapped her wings to her body as they were sore and stuck upright. Nothing appears to be broken, but I am keeping her...
I have lost 2 chicks since mama and I hatched all the silkie eggs. But all has been well since. Lotsa happy babies, feisty and hopping everywhere. With the temperatures being so high lately, would it be safe for me to let them play outside their brooder in the grass under the trees? I usually do...
In just a few days, I will have a total of 43 chicks hatched, either by broody hens or incubated by me. I will have to recount all my birds at the end of the month. My silkies decided to go broody all at the same time, another 15 will hatch soon. Unfortunately, they may not all be pure silkies...
Not in this case, it was a good looking egg. Just strikes me as odd. I thought all the eggs were gonna make it. 12 out of 13 isn't bad though. Still don't get it. Humidity was good at all times. I'd cover the incubator with a warmed wet towel when taking chicks out, when I still had a few to go...
When I candled the egg, I noticed a very big air pocket. No movement. I cracked the egg at the air pocket and when the egg opened, there my chick was. Shrink wrapped and it never had any cracks or pips in the last days. I'm scratching my head. It absorbed the yolk and blood vessels. It looks...
Baby is doing amazing. I placed her with Mom yesterday afternoon, so she could start getting caught up with the rest of the babies. It went perfectly. She ran to her and went right under her chest. Love them!
