Is two roos one too many for 13 hens??

They’re about 30 weeks or so. I think the fact that they split in to two flicks and free range at all times has helped their dynamic. I don’t have a ton of experience with roosters, but the ones I had that we culled were mostly hard and seemingly full of teenage hormones around 15-20 weeks...

Is two roos one too many for 13 hens??

My answer will likely not be popular, but my flock of 9 has split in to two. My lead roo has 3 hens, and my other roo has 4. They don’t all travel together when they free range, but they sleep together. No signs of over mating, and they’re so good with their ladies. Always calling them when they...

Poll: How often do you check on your chickens in the heat?

I see them if they’re around when we get them water once a day or collect eggs in the evening, otherwise I don’t check on them. They free range and have about 300 acres of shaded woodland to stay cool in. Then most of them sleep in a tree at night, so sometimes I don’t see much of them lol.

    Puffy eyes and bubbles

My birds had these symptoms, I treated them with Tylosin and the symptoms went away. The only symptoms they had the first time (a few years ago) were puffy eyes with bubbles. This last time they got it they struggled with breathing, but it was the hottest most humid part of the year so I’m sure...

    Swollen eyes

That’s how it is here too with vets. I’ve learned a lot from this site. When in doubt, or if answers are slow to come in, use the search function! It’s helped me many times! ❤️

    Swollen eyes

It is! It’s pricey but it lasts a long time and mycoplasma can be fatal if not treated, so it’s good to have on hand in my opinion. https://www.chewy.com/tylosin-tartrate-generic-soluble/dp/202381

    Swollen eyes

If it’s a bee sting it should go down in a day or so. If it persists I would consider getting Tylosin for their water. Hopefully just a sting and they’re all better by tomorrow! ❤️

    Swollen eyes

Let us know what the vet says! I would assume it’s mycoplasma and it’s really easy to treat and clears up quickly, typically. But those are the only 2 things I have experience with, when it comes to swollen eyes/faces.

    Swollen eyes

Has there been any sneezing or anything that you’ve noticed? Bubbles in their eyes at all? Any bee hives around? I’ve had chickens with swollen faces/eyes for 2 different reasons. 1 - there was a bees nest beside their coop and the one hen got too close and curious. 2 - mycoplasma, which I...

    Trespassers and ducklings...

I hope there isn’t a mama duck looking for her babies somewhere! I wonder if ducks adopt abandoned ducklings like doe’s do abandoned fawns?

    Fawn in my yard

I did try to clean it off at the advice of the one rehab center, but the injury and infestation was too extensive. I wish I would have found it sooner, but I’m thankful it’s not suffering any longer. Praying for its mama that will likely return this evening in search of her baby. 😔

    Fawn in my yard

The game warden came and put it down. It had flies and maggots all over its back side. 😢 I think it must have gotten injured at some point and just went downhill. Poor sweet thing.

    Fawn in my yard

Yeah, I might call to see. It just took about 6 steps before falling, which is the most I’ve seen it walk in 24 hours. I wonder if it’s dehydrated or something and weak instead of injured. It’s been so, so hot.

    Fawn in my yard

Hello! Thought I’d see if anyone here had advice. There’s a fawn down by my garden, no idea how old. It looks to me to be a week old or maybe a bit more, still has spots. I know mama can leave baby for hours and hours, even over night. Mom has come back once that we know of to tend to her baby...

    Kids and Chickens

My 10 year old gets the chicken water every morning, and my 10 and 8 year old go out together to gather eggs every evening. They have other chores with our other animals and around the house, so that’s where we’ve landed for now! They know never to turn their back to our roosters, and have...
