Hello! :frow
This is Betty (the black chicken in the photos, and one of her as a chick because, why not!)
She is 12 weeks old, and already 18 inches from floor to back. I bought her as an Orpington egg along with 2 other buff Orpington eggs.
Betty is significantly larger and heavier than her...
Hello!
I incubated and hatched 3 eggs, sold to me as Orpingtons, although my beautiful black Betty is already as big as a small turkey.
Betty = people seem content that she is a pullet. However, she is huge; I’d be interested in your thoughts here. Very small, pale comb and wattles but pointier...
Wait until they pip - oh my goodness… attached are photos from an assisted hatch. Betty from her egg (2 days late pipping, so I went in) and how she is today.
It’s absolutely attention and time consuming, but they are my world.
Good luck!
I've got Orps - 8 weeks and 3 days old.
Yours has the red comb and wattle of my buff here (photo attached, next to my black Orpington - same age - for comparison).
This buff also has an occasional and deliberate peck when he's not enjoying something, whereas my other two (with much paler combs...
Hi - yes, I’ve seen that and REALLY wish I’d seen it when they were small enough to hold in one hand and manipulate - but they are getting big now. I might try it after a few drinks one night! It is a really good video; thanks for the reminder x
She/he is fascinating - wattles and a comb sprouted enthusiastically at 4 weeks but then just stopped. I’m starting to think pullet, too. Have you got any pics of your boy at 7 weeks?
I spent a small fortune on dried mealworms for my 7 week olds, knowing that the garden birds loved them so much.
They won’t eat them! They come running to me, all earnest and interested, have one peck, and then retreat in disappointment. If they were human, they would be shaking their heads, sadly.
Hello again!
The general consensus at 5 weeks was that my beautiful black Orpington (Betty) was a cockerel. However, since then my buff (same age) has overtaken “Betty” in terms of comb and wattle. Betty’s comb is now much more like the buff we think is a pullet (not in photos), although the...
That’s how I feel now, too. I’ve learnt the importance of keeping those membranes damp, though - I lost one to shrink-wrapping. It was amazing how the process just works itself out - I could see the blood vessels withdraw, the chick absorb the yolk - it would have been such a shame to lose her...
Yes - the black feathers do seem pointier than on the buffs. Red-combed buff tries to be a bit of an alpha, too.
Looks like I might have a lonely lady in a few weeks’ time
