I really like my vet who helps me with my chickens....but every time I call to get an appointment (3 in 3 years), the person answering the phone says " Now they are just chickens...we are really busy and our appointments cost $65. I have to insist she ask the vet if I can have an appointment...
Update: I looked for new approvals and didn't find anything so called ELANCO and this may be where the confusion lies....it is approved for NORTHERN FOWL MITES ONLY in poultry (and control of flies /darkling beetles in poultry and other farm animal housing). My chickens have had regular old...
I contacted ELANCO on for chicken data about 10 months ago and they told me they have no data and no recommendation. I will have to check again if the study has been published, approval and dosing are now available.
My "hot chicken" tips
DH put a solar powered fan (like we use in the greenhouse) in the peak of our coop. (He says "based on the (?fan size/speed/i am not sure what really) the air in the coop is changed out 12 times per hour". He also added a flip up/flip down hook above the coops back window...
I ordered 2 Starlight Green, ( AND 2 Prairie Bluebells and 3 Easter Egger, Aspen Spitzenhauser, Buckeye, ISA Brown, etc.) from Hoover Hatchery. When they came yesterday, I was really surprised to see wing feathers on them (clearly 1-2 day old chicks). Previous chicks from other breeds have been...
I have spent too much time reading up on S&S, treatment, etc. BUT DO THEY HAVE Scaly Leg Disease at all? Both are 4 years old. They don't seem to be in pain....

I need the perfect hot and cold climate coop. Kansas 111 high last summer and I think -12 the low with a howling 40 mph wind so far this winter. Wait..... do I need TWO coops?? One at each end of the hoop run??? I am all about it, but will require hard evidence to convince DH!
Seriously, Woods...
This seems to work for me...head lamp with a red light option. It doesn't seem to bother them in the coop and it doesn't seem to draw as many bugs to me during the summers.
We built a very similar hoop coop several years ago with an easy clean drop door in the wooden sleeping quarters, a storage compartment that holds the water tank for the nipple system and misc. stuff. We borrowed heavily from Carolina Coops and a YouTube version we really admired. It moved as a...
I have never seen a chicken house that didn't have a preferred box!! And I don't know how they pick the "good" one...I watch them run back and forth from the blackberry bushes all day with their knees together hoping the nest on the far right is finally available!! Some of the younger layers...
