    Duckling hatched with deformed bill

This little fella hatched not too long ago. I can't even tell if it an open it's bill. What do you think it's chances are? It's one of the survivors from my infamous 60 hour power outage. The eggs were at around 5 days incubation at the time. I'm thinking this may have been the issue...

Adjusting for 60 hour Power Outage

After the massive storm that hit the north east last week, I lost power for almost 60 hours. I had two incubators running, one that was in lockdown. The incubators were wrapped and bundled so as to save as much heat as possible but after three days that was kind of moot. After I let the eggs...

    Dusky Buffs?

Is there such a thing as a Dusky Buff Orpington? I got Coco a couple of years ago and thought she was a Buff, but when I got another Buff a few weeks ago this one is much lighter in colour. Coco has no markings whatsoever, just a mostly uniform milk-chocolate brown, with gray at her wings...

Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Inspired by so many other blogs, I decided to make my own. I'll try to update daily. First, the name. Falling Down Heights. Finally figured out a name for my little homestead. Because I fell down, again. And we live in the mountains. Today's fall happened when I was giving the ducks...

    Getting Brahmas

After debating for a few years, I'm finally going to take the plunge and get some Brahmas. I've ordered 2 Light females, 2 Dark females, and 2 Buff females, as well as a Buff male. What would chicks with this male be? Chicken genetics are currently way above my head, even though I have a very...

My duck turned into a drake!!!

:rant Picture this. Duckling that I hatched myself, so had since pre-birth (lol). Grew up with three 'siblings', so it was easy to compare as they matured. This duckling started quacking at the same time, if not a bit earlier, as two of the others. And I mean QUACK. Nice and loud! Great...

    More colour confirmations on mixed-breeds

Approximately 8 weeks old. Mother is a Splash Bantam Cochin, or is supposed to be as I raided her hidden nest! Father is a ??? Choice of a red mixed-breed, or a BBR EE. Obviously, Momma has some hidden genes, lol! Curious about the two on the left. Bottom one I think is a Blue Buff. The...

Difference between Muscovy and Domestic ducklings

I'm kind of embarrassed to be asking this but... what is the difference between domestic ducklings and Muscovy ducklings at hatch??! lol

    Rooster brooding. Is this normal?

Greetings! As the title says, I have a rooster sitting on an egg! He's a bantam Cochin, and today I found him in a nesting box sitting on an egg and making 'come hither' sounds. Is he just trying to lure one of the hens to come sit? I know Cochin are renown for being broody at the drop of a...

    Breed ideas?

Almost 100% sure his father was a Silver-Gray Dorking (he has five toes), although it could also be a RIR. He hatched from a banty egg (can't remember actual size, but he was the first from a batch of 15 to hatch), so mom would be either a Silkie x, Cochin banty (he's clean legged though)...

    Eggs not fertile

What am I doing wrong? Or rather, what are my Muscovy doing wrong?? Last year, all three of my hens sat, and none of the eggs were fertile. I got rid of the male and brought in 'fresh blood'. I currently have three broodies, two of which have been sitting for over a week if not more, so...

BLR Wyandotte Roo x Mauve Orpington Hen

Been trying to input this into various calculators, but none of them have the mauve option. I picked up two chicks today and am curious as to what they will look like. Anyone know?

    Breed mix?

Heya, I hatched out a bunch of 'barnyard mix' eggs last month, chicks are four weeks old today and feathering out nicely. Roos are either Silver Dorking or RIR. Hens are RIR, Lav Orp, Red sex-link, Black sex-link, Olive Eggers, and Chanteclair (also some banties, but these were full-sized eggs...

Rabbit genetics, I think I got it!

Greetings! Hoping some of you bunny genetic gurus can tell me if this sounds right. I recently bred my Blue buck to my Chinchilla doe, and the kits are now a week old. From what I can tell, I have two Blacks, one Chestnut Agouti, one Tort, one Blue Tor, and one Blue Otter. Armed with...

    Mixed Breed guesses?

This is my pretty boy, Big Red. He is BIG, and he is RED. Anyone think they can pick out breed(s)? Got him last Fall as a barnyard mix. He has a very sweet personality, is gentle around the hens and people, and even backs down from my Cochin Bantam cockerel.

Rabbit pellets as a greens supplement?

My ducks LOVE the pellets I feed my rabbits. When I'm going around their cages, I am stalked by quacking, trilling, and hissing hordes. So I was wondering, since the pellets are basically ground up dried grass, is it okay to use them as supplemental green food for the birds?

    Masculine pullet or feminine cockerel?

I have a frizzle cochin bantam that is puzzling the heck out of me. Hatched late April or early May, can't remember. Comb development is somewhere between it's sister and it's brothers. And it crows, but very softly and usually not a complete crow and not all the time like my other cockerels...

    OEGB chicks, Duckwing genetics

I recently acquired a quadre of Silver Duckwing OEGB at a local livestock sale. I took care of their scaly leg mites, got their nails all trimmed, and made them as comfortable as I could in a repurposed small-animal cage (impulse purchase, bad me, didn't have coop space for them). They must...
