I love this and try so hard to keep these for my girls but they destroy as fast as I plant. I need to try and have a better way to keep them out while they become established - it's a full-time job lol
Mine free-range during the day, so I feed them only once daily, about an hour before I coop them for the night. The only time they get fed in the morning is if they have to remain cooped all-day
I've been checking my camera occasionally and running outside to spray them with a spray bottle when I catch them in there. When my son called asked me what I was doing and I said "chasing chickens with a spray bottle" he told me I had stumped him so bad he didn't remember what he called for...
Like most of us, I've had to become creative to keep my hens away from my potted plants but I would love to create a garden for them, hoping that will help. I know it needs to be established before they're released into it - my question is - how long did y'all keep your hens out before deciding...
Thank you - that's great information. This is my first time with this breed, and also the first time I impulsively obtained instead of researching first. I appreciate your detailed reply.
I have 3 Black Sex Links about 14 weeks old and a little worried about the tail feathers on two of them. Attaching pictures of 2 of the three of them. Loved to have your thoughts
Two of them look like the first picture and the other one looks like the second.
I’ve started a garden for my hens, it’s currently sectioned off until the plants can mature but I’m having issues with possibly aphids but for sure some type of insect.
Will lady bugs help control this and where can I purchase them? What are other natural remedies I can use? I refuse to use...
I have three 4 week old black sex links. I’ve always kept my chicks in the brooder until they’re about 7 weeks then I move them to a run next to the coop for a few more weeks before fully integrating and allowing free range.
However, these little ones seem to be maturing faster as well as...
We are going to go over with a a fine tooth comb this afternoon to ensure just that. We thought we already had but with the heavy rains and freezing we've had lately I'm thinking there's a hole somewhere we hadn't seen
Yes, she was laying under her perch, she had two wounds on her and a ton of feathers were in the coop. Possibly we scared off whatever it was. It's brutal
This morning around 1:00 am, my dog went on full alert beside me, ran into the den and started barking at the back windows. We walked outside but didn’t see anything, the hens started squawking and as we got nearer the coop I heard my husband say, “Angelica?”
Something had found its way in and...
Can I give them eggs shells from my hens which they're in the same yard but of course not in the same coop?
I've always been told not to give egg shells if not from the same flock.
Thank you for the response!
-We are feeding a game bird starter feed - 30% protein
-We are down in southeast Texas - near the coast they have a good amount of light each day. Some cooler days but pretty moderate
-The roo seems super docile, protective of them but I've never seen violence from...
I was gifted 6 quail in August, based on their colorings I'm assuming I have 1 male and 4 female, I'm thinking they're around 14-15 weeks and have not laid yet. Is this common? I've raised chickens but never quail so total quail newbie here.
They’re 6 months. And pretty sure. No crowing and she was the first one laying. Unless she climbs into the box and lays on the egg immediately after one of the other two. But she’s the only one I’ve ever caught in the nesting box
This is my first time with SS, I got them at the same time from the same location so they’re all the same age.
Why does one have such a bigger brighter comb than the other two? I waited until after the other two were laying to ask this just to make sure they weren’t just slower at developing.
I wanted to check back in - My sweet Peahen is doing great, on day 12 of being sick and isolated when I offered her treats she ate a bit then went to her food and pecked a bit there. I offered her more treats the next morning and she ate a little more, that evening she ate every bit of it then...
This is how she looks this morning. She’s not been ruffled up like I’ve seen some photos of blackhead peas.
She just seems tired and no energy. I only see fight in her when we’re giving her meds. We’re on day 10 of this and I don’t know what to do. It feels like a guessing game and it’s...
