Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

I think the cattle panel hoop run has won and I'm going to do the same as you have with the ridge beam. It's great to know that it can handle snow! Thanks for the help! At least now I've got a plan for summer and some coops and runs to copy :)

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

I'm in the design phase and am considering what to buy for my garden and whether to buy another for my run or whether to build a cattle panel style for that (the run, not the coop, that is going to be a shed). High tunnels tend to be wider than cattle panels can do but I can adjust the lengths...

High Tunnel Plus Electric Poultry Netting

Hi all, I'm planning a new fenced garden this summer as well as a chicken run. I think I've settled on a shed plus a hoop-style run for the chickens, basing the run on the cattle panel design I found on this forum in order to keep all the predators out. I'm wondering now about using a high...

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

I have also decided on a shed for a coop conversion and I've got a bunch of ideas on how to set up the inside from the coops on this forum! It's the run I'm thinking of for the tunnel, it needs to be pretty large, potentially movable, able to handle snow loads, and fully enclosed with a cover...

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

I've got galvanized cans where I keep my horse feed for that reason so I'm thinking I'll do the same as you for my chickens. I'm reading and researching and looking forward with eager anticipation to summertime when I hope to have a plan and start making it happen!

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

If they do I bet a fisher cat (weasel family) would too. Well, I think that's pretty clear, I need to have a barrier over the whole structure and not just the hardware cloth at the bottom. Maybe the cattle panel hoop run is the better approach!

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

If I do this I will definitely switch out at least part of the cover for shade cloth in summer and also add the electric fence and apron. I'm just not sure whether I need to run the hardware cloth completely across the roof, or transition to a larger metal grid, or if I can stop the metal...

Predator proofing a high tunnel conversion to chicken run

I'm researching covered runs for my first flock which will not be free ranged outside of their run, and I've seen some great cattle-panel hoop runs posted here. I'm wondering about converting a garden high tunnel in a similar way, with the skirting and hardware cloth around the lower 3 ft. The...

CUTEST CAT COMPETITION -ends Apr 10th-

Callie is so pretty, I love black and white! Your description reminds me of our cat Mirabelle, posted above, who is also quite skittish in some ways but extremely confident in others!

Pregnant Feral Cat That Showed Up Possibly Due Soon?

What a beautiful cat! I wish you all were nearby, we are looking to adopt another cat to keep our single indoor kitty company. She's now 6 and was a feral kitten also whose mom was trapped and the kittens adopted out, which we got from the local humane society. I wonder, I know there must be...

CUTEST CAT COMPETITION -ends Apr 10th-

Entry 1 Name: Mirabelle Breed: DSH (mixed, unknown) Age: 6 years Color: Black Desc: Her mom was a feral kitty who was caught and spayed and her kittens adopted out. We got her at 10 weeks of age and she was already very confident in herself, with the exception of noises - she was then and has...

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

Yes for sure, they made a bit of a mess last summer and all I was doing then was replacing landscape plants that the deer had eaten with different ones that the deer don't seem to like as much, so the plants were bigger. This year I'm going to move my garden into more sun and a good fence has to...

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

I kind of thought this also as I watched it happen, with sorrow because their chickens coming over to visit me as I worked in my garden was the final straw that determined me to stop waiting for the perfect time and go forward with my flock. I'm hoping it will become so after this experience!

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

You all were right, the fox came back sometime within the past hour to get her chicken so there is an empty hole in the garden and a trail of feathers heading out to the woods behind the house. For me this has been a valuable first hand experience because it confirms to me how careful I...

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

I think they didn't realize this would happen because of inexperience. There are lots of reports of people who are able to free range in their specific area or situation with maybe only an occasional loss and I think they thought that outcome was an okay tradeoff for giving the surviving...

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

They're nice people, I think the chicks and coop were an impulse buy last year. I did make a couple suggestions including this website.

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

I do really like the fox and I am planning a secure enclosed run and coop when I get my flock. We're not really in a reasonable place for free ranging, we've got lots of predators but also the road, the neighbor has already seen someone narrowly avoid an accident trying to dodge his chickens out...

Fox buried neighbor's chicken in my garden this morning

We caught this fox out yesterday in late morning with the last of the neighbor's (free ranging) chickens. Of their 10 babies from last summer they've lost all 10 to predators. It was too late to save the chicken, so we watched Mrs. Fox while she rested a while. After a bit of rest, or thinking...

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

Aha, thank you for the info! I'll have to factor that in to my thinking about how I proceed. You know, I had asked about local chicken keeping clubs and it seemed like there weren't any, around here at least, the online group format was taking its place. But I used to have bees and the local...
