UPDATE! Results of my Black Laced Silver (BLS) X Blue and Splash English Orpingtons.
I ended up with 4 pullets and 6 cockerels from this cross. The pullets all look "Blue" and 2 have some minor birchen like bleed through. The cockerels are a bit more varied. 1 has a black base, the other 5 blue...
Lacy (in front) has been sitting on 21 eggs for nearly 3 weeks now and a few days ago Ring moved in to steal part of the soon to be baby glory at the grand finale. Toto (the third BLS) and Mini (the smaller Splash) still lay their eggs in there every day and I have to fish them out.
This is the one I kept from the last hatch (4/21-22). It was significantly lighter than all the others. I am 95% sure it was from a splash egg. There is one lighter one in this latest batch hatching today as well. And 2 of them are nearly black.
I am in Northern Nevada.
My fourth batch of these chicks is hatching today. And I have nest with two BLS sisters on it due soon (egss from all the Orps). So far ALL of the Splash and Blue hens chicks (covered by the BLS roo) are coming out Blue and indistinguishable from each other. There has...
Are speckled eggs harder to hatch? I have Orpingtons. The Blue and Splash eggs are smooth and hatch readily. The Black Laced Silver have various levels of speckling and I do not get as good a hatch rate with them. And the more heavily speckled ones (from one hen) develop but never seem to pip...
I have 2 Splash and 1 Blue English (and 3 Black Laced Silver) English Orpington hens. ALL being covered by a Black Laced Silver Rooster. The Chicks from the Splash and Blue hens are all "Blue" and indistinguishable. I have been selling all my chicks and some hatching eggs. There is a HUGE...
Indeed, it is a week later and the muff is definitively growing back in.
Many of the chicks available at the breeder had feathered legs, I deliberately chose those without.
Interesting about the Olive Egger mom, OK, thanks. I thought maybe the Silverudds and the Americaunas both having Crested...
That is what I have heard too. But that is what is weird about chick #3. It has the dark lines/wash down the front of the legs, just like the other two. But everything else is pointing to cockerel (comb, barring, head spot, feathering, size, attitude).
I went to the feed store last week to pick up Black Rock Pullets and they had just sold out...BUT the Owner said there were 3 Barred Rocks in the "Assorted Pullet" Brooder. And indeed there were 3 chicks in the "Assorted Pullet" cage that appeared to be Barred Rocks. So I brought them home...
Just Kidding!
This ~5 week old Cockerel (I assume) is looking more like a Cockatiel daily. As a chick he had muffs, which may grow back ae he finishes molting his down and gets his face and neck feathers.
He was bought at 2-3 days of age with 9 other chicks as an "Easter Egger", private...
Thank you! This very helpful. Is this true for all the white tailed red sex-linked crosses? Mine was actually sold as a "Golden Sex-link" from Dunlop Hatchery in Idaho. From what I can tell, "It was created by crossing a Rhode Island Red rooster with a Rhode Island White hen."
So, an update. I hatched 7 chicks. 4 Blacked Laced Silver Orpingtons. 2 Black Laced Silver Orpington roo over a Blue Orpington hen. And 1 Black Laced Silver Orpington Roo over my Golden Sex-linked hen. Attached are some pics. The Blue and BLS look as expected. The Golden Sex link Cross is mostly...
OK, so the pic I posted before was cropped from one the person hatching the eggs sent me. Below is the whole picture. As you can see there is a black chick and 2 yellow/white chicks as well as the blue. They are not sure which chick came out of which egg and they have Barnyard Mix eggs in the...
NatJ, so what are her genetics to put into the calculator? And this chick looks female? Sorry it is not a better picture. I sold some of her eggs and the hatcher sent this pic. I have some of her eggs in the incubator myself, but they are about a week behind.
